Another two installments of Three Pines, another murder mystery is solved. It’s all becoming a little repetitive over on the Prime Video crime drama. In this double bill, Armand (Alfred Molina) and his team investigate the murder of Marc Fortier, who was found buried in the school’s torture chamber. This tale uncovers a dark history at the school, which links with the villagers and the murders in the present. As always, the Blue Two-River’s case continues to build momentum. There are lots to enjoy here, but the show is bogged down by pretentious segments and a surprisingly obvious, repetitive streak. Here’s what happened in Three Pines season 1, episode 4:
- Armand interrogates Peter Morrow. He admits that Marc was his therapist in secret. Peter gave painting lessons in return. Peter wanted to delete the therapy notes from Marc’s laptop. He has many secrets he wants to remain hidden.
- Isabelle finds bleached blood stains in Tommy and Kevin’s house. The blood is eventually revealed to be from Blue. Isabelle is visited by Youth Protection, after an anonymous complaint about her parenting. Isabelle is distraught.
- Yvette finds footage on a teen’s phone that shows Sophie at the building and Bea there too. Armand confronts Bea, who lied to him. She is passive-aggressive towards the detective.
- The police discover more about the school. Bea’s brother drowned after escaping. Arisawe Two-Rivers was a pupil there too.
- Armand searches Marc’s laptop and returns a memory stick of his findings to Peter. He is a free man, the notes don’t link him to the crime anymore.
- Isabelle finds a hidden passageway in the building that explains how the killer escaped without being seen.
- Kara admits to making the anonymous phone call. Arisawe believes the caretaker killed her brother and the other boys. Armand digs in the torture chamber and finds the missing bodies. Armand informs Bea of the news. She still denies killing Marc, even though she had many reasons to want him dead.
- They discover voice notes that imply that Marc was helping Sophie escape to New York. Hayden then becomes the prime suspect, but can’t be found at home. He manically drives Sophie away from the village. The police chase and Hayden is forced to stop by a passing bear. Hayden is arrested and confesses to the murder, stating that he was only defending his daughter. She wanted to get away and Marc was helping her. Hayden was one hell of a controlling father.
- The old school is burnt down. Bea watches the blaze with the other locals, with a smile on her face.

Excellent drama. Quirky, but very human characters. Can be a bit fragmented at times, especially in regard to the investigation around the disappearance of Blue Two Rivers. Overall one of the better Prime series and well worth watching.
Characters in IMDB ‘Three Pines’ series do not match Louise Penny’s original description. Olivie B, who, owns the Bistro, was tall, BLONDE and a very skilled antiques merchant. His purchases are the decor in his Bistro and yes, all items displayed, as the decor in his Bistro, have price tags. Olivier also owns Myrna Landers’ bookstore. Olivier and Gabri settled in Three Pines years before Myrna L stumbled upon that village. Olivier never told Gabri, that Olivier had already purchased owned that real estate parcel. Olivier had his own legitimate high-dollar monetary resources.
I think your comments on the show are really out of touch. I absolutely love it and especially the characters and beautiful writing. Great twisting murder mysteries, a bit of magical realism and dealing with the very important overlooked issues of the Native Canadians. There are so many wonderful female characters especially older ones who we so rarely see on screen and maybe this is what’s riling you as a male reviewer so much. Not all shows have to be for the boys you know! There’s a reason Three Pines is the number one show on prime in the US. Maybe you need to rewatch and think again!
I watched Three Pines and was disappointed with some things. I think the casting left a lot to be desired. The actor playing Gamache constantly looks like a deer caught in the headlights. Clara looks like she belongs in high school, Ruth overdoes the cursing even though she is like that in the book. She doesn’t seem like the real Ruth. Beauvoir is way off. Too timid and reticent. I hope the series continues though because I loved the books and I will stick with everyone even though their a bit off!
