After his Oscar-winning performance in King Richard, Will Smith returns with another award-worthy performance in Emancipation directed by Antoine Fuqua. Writer Bill Collage explores the journey of a runaway slave in Louisiana, as he forges through swamps on a torturous journey to escape the plantation owners who nearly killed him.
Many men have had the will to push through no matter the obstacles and Smith’s Peter is a prime example of that. The film is difficult to watch because of the subject matter but does well to educate audiences about the treatment of slaves. There is a percentage of people who there who do not support making slave films because they feel that Black trauma is exploited.
On the other hand, a percentage believes that films such as these are important to make because people need to be properly educated on American history. There are probably many stories that are yet to be told and that’s why it’s important for these stories to come out in any shape or form.
Emancipation sequel potential release date
Considering that this is more of a historical film, there has been no discussion to make a sequel. It also doesn’t make sense to make a sequel to a story this draining and heartbreaking. Smith delivers a strong performance but Peter’s story should end with this film. Apple TV+ does not have a potential release date for this film. If there were to be a sequel to this film it could be in about two or three years from now because Emancipation was in development for a while before it was released on Apple TV+.

Emancipation sequel plot: what could Emancipation 2 be about?
The sequel to Emancipation could be about Peter and his family. The war still goes on when Peter returns to his family at the end of the film. So the sequel could explore him trying to move on from the hardships he faced.
He could try to live a normal life with his family and find work. He could also try and save other slaves from the plantations and bring them home to their families. It’s entirely possible that there could be a loving story for the sequel. Peter could also suffer from PTSD while moving forward with his family.
There could be glimpses of his past and what he went through, but the happiness of his family will still be the one thing to push him forward. It’s always difficult to express feelings, especially when those feelings come from such a traumatic past. But it’s important to also show how Peter handles his mental health as he works towards a new life with his family.
