The charming new Netflix anime Gudetama: An Eggcellent Adventure is about the titular listless egg and his friend Shakipiyo teaming up to try and find their mother. It features a ton of character and some lovely computer-generated visuals blended with a live-action world and a self-aware sense of humor. And despite having only gained a full Netflix season on the strength of a second-place competition entry, it still kind of leaves the door open for a continuation.
Those taken with the show, or who have been following the development of its characters or the work of OLM and L’ESPACE FILM, who handled the visuals, might be wondering about its potential future, so here’s everything we know.
Will there be a Gudetama: An Eggcellent Adventure season 2?
Renewed or canceled status: TBC
At the time of writing there doesn’t seem to be any official word of renewal. To be fair, though, it’s not as if Netflix have made much of a marketing fuss about the series is general.
This is exactly the kind of show that thrives on word of mouth. There is plenty of meme potential here, at the very least, and one assumes given the relatively short runtime — it’s ten episodes, but they’re only around ten minutes each — that the show is relatively quick to make. It’s the kind of thing I could imagine Netflix indulging it, especially if it proves to be popular, which I suspect it might.
The ending of the show also left things a little open, with Shakipiyo setting out to look for her own mother, and Gudetama being essentially reborn.
Don’t take this to the bank, but I have a sneaking suspicion that Netflix will renew Gudetama: An Eggcellent Adventure for Season 2.
