In our age of reboots, sequels, revivals, redos, and reimaginings, it was only a matter of time before the House of Mouse turned its attention to National Treasure, a brand made iconic in the mid-2000s thanks to two excellent Nic Cage movies that wove exciting treasure hunts and conspiracies around American history. National Treasure: Edge of History is a ten-part Disney+ series that reimagines the brand for the Gen Z crowd to… let’s say mixed results.
Here’s what happened in the first two episodes:
- Our protagonist, Jess, was led to Harvey Keitel through a storage container, and he gave her a clue to a mystery that, of course, involves her recently-passed mother and absentee, supposedly deadbeat father.
- The treasure everyone is looking for was spirited away from Montezuma’s palaces back in the day by indigenous women to protect them from Hernán Cortés. The map leading to it is hidden in three puzzle boxes, one of which Jess is able to find and open.
- Billie, a black market antiquities dealer working for persons as-yet unknown, kidnapped Jess’s friend Oren in order to strongarm her into having over the box. Eventually, despite some attempts at duplicity, Jess did so, but only after having taken photos of the disassembled relic.
- Salazar, the man Jess’s father double-crossed in the prologue, seems to be alive and in prison.

The latest episode is scheduled to be released on Wednesday, December 21 at 12 am PT, 3 am ET, and 8 am GMT, exclusively on Disney+.

Predictions
- Who is Billie working for? It doesn’t seem like “Salazar”, so I’m guessing probably someone in the U.S. government or some such. This would be a good way to keep the FBI plot connected to the main 0ne.
- Is Jess’s father still alive? We never saw him die, which is usually a good sign in shows like this. Is he “Salazar”, the guy in prison? Good bet.
- The next episode will surely see Jess and friends trying to put together the map before Billie does, leading to a race to the next relic.
