“The Year Of Phil” is the second to last episode of Mythic Quest season 3. In this installment, David (David Hornsby) spars with actor Joe Manganiello, Poppy (Charlotte Nicdao) prepares for her Playpen pitch, and Carol (Naomi Ekperigin) tries to avoid a class action lawsuit in the workplace. It’s another solid chapter from the Apple Original, as characters are given space to progress and old rivalries reach a face-off. Here’s what happened in season 3, episode nine of Mythic Quest:
- Joe Manganiello is brought in to do some test footage for the studio. He puts a custom-made mask on during the filming. David is too cowardly to tell Joe to take the mask off. David’s assistant Jo texts Ian to come and help. Ian is ready to fight Joe if he has to, but they bond instead.
- Poppy practices her pitch to Dana and some office grunts. Dana says that the pitch is good, but she has no confidence in herself. Poppy needs to be more confident, to sell herself, as much as the game.
- Carol holds a meeting to introduce the new employees. She brags about her success stories with Brad and Rachel, then quietly dismisses Phil, the art director. Carol thinks he is the old-school type and Phil declares this throwaway comment as ageism in the workplace. He’s waited years for this misstep, which he thinks will lead to a lawsuit and a big payout.
- Brad and Rachel look into all the employees at the company, it is a very diverse bunch. Ironically, Carol has done such a good job it is hard to find anyone to fire. She wants to hire some old people to offset the lawsuit, but it is proving tough to sack anyone at all.
- Dana teaches Poppy how to be more confident, but Poppy can’t get out of her own head. Dana talks about ‘their’ game. Poppy is shocked Dana thinks she co-owns Playpen. Poppy built it, but Dana believes she was the one who saw its potential. Poppy is impressed by Dana’s confidence and decides to copy her colleague’s attitude.
- Joe and Ian bond during the film shoot. David has had enough though and orders Ian to leave. David holds his own and Ian submits. Jo is impressed and forces David to stand up to actor Joe, even though he doesn’t know he has done so. David rants at Jo, but she has pressed down the speaker button and actor Joe thinks he’s talking to him. Joe accepts the feedback and removes the mask.
- Phil tries to gather signatures, but Carol has already hired two older workers. This will probably put an end to Phil’s lawsuit plans.
- Poppy’s pitch goes well with her new confident swagger, but the investors pass. They are still bitter about Poppy’s last rejection and they think that Playpen is unprofitable anyway.

Predictions
- Poppy’s Playpen game appears to be dead in the water. She will tell Ian the bad news or he’ll find out somehow. Will they reunite and decide to build a new and improved game together, or will Ian gloat about Poppy’s misfortune and take over the reins? I think they’re heading for a happy ending, hopefully, they collaborate again on a better project.
- David will have a renewed outlook after his confrontation with Ian. I’m expecting him to be a new man going forward. David will throw himself into the movie’s production and start to make some solid decisions.
- That will be the end of Phil’s big plans. I think he’ll quit out of awkwardness. Could Phil jump ship and move to GrimPop? This could possibly be the start of a new, exciting team-up.
