Following the release of episode 8 of Yellowstone season 5 on Paramount Network, it’s been announced that the next few episodes will not be released for a few months. A 30-second spot aired right after episode 8 of the fifth season on Sunday night, where the network promised viewers new episodes will be coming soon.
They also encouraged them to stay tuned into the hashtag #YellowstoneTV on social media to keep up with the latest updates, as well as interviews with the cast and behind-the-scenes content.
Why is there a midseason break for Yellowstone Season 5?
No official reason has been provided, though reading between the lines, we can try to interpret what’s been going on on the Yellowstone set over the past year. Cameras for the fifth season started rolling in early 2022, and Taylor Sheridan, Kevin Costner, and the rest of the crew filmed the first eight episodes (perhaps more).
However, at some point during the summer, lead actor Kevin Costner left to focus on his upcoming movie Horizon, a Western he’s described as his ultimate passion project. Production began in late August with Sienna Miller and Sam Worthington attached to star. Costner is directing and acting in it, the first time he’s done it since 2003’s Open Range.
Cameras are currently rolling for both Horizon and Yellowstone, which could mean the Paramount Network series is shooting around Kevin Costner, waiting for him to finish the movie. It’s unknown how Horizon will impact future seasons of the series, though — the actor/director has expressed hopes for the movie to be the first of a trilogy, so we could be in a similar situation a couple of years from now.
How many episodes will Yellowstone Season 5 have?
Season 5 is confirmed to have a total of 14 episodes. The first eight have already aired on Paramount Network, and the other six are still to come in 2023. Compared to previous seasons, it will be the longest yet, as the first had 9 episodes, while seasons two, three, and four had 10 episodes each.
When will Yellowstone Season 5 return for Part 2 episodes?
According to the ad that aired on Paramount Network after the midseason finale, the final six episodes of season 5 are expected to come at some point during the summer of 2023. No specific release date has been set, and there’s really no point in trying to guess. If Costner has indeed not shot anything for the final six episodes, as it was previously speculated, it’s possible that we are looking more at a late-summer release date (August, most likely), but this is pure speculation at this point.
Meanwhile, viewers eager to keep up with the Yellowstone universe can watch 1923, a sequel to the first Yellowstone spin-off 1883 but still a prequel to the main show. The new series stars Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren as Jacob and Cara Dutton.
New episodes of Yellowstone will air on Paramount Network, and since NBCUniversal bought the streaming rights to the series back in 2020, the fifth season will eventually live on Peacock, where the first four seasons can currently be seen. Ratings for the fifth season are obliterating Paramount’s wildest expectations for a neo-Western show airing on cable television, so more seasons are all but guaranteed. In fact, actress Kelly Reilly teased in an interview with Vulture that this is not the end yet, even if Kevin Costner teased in an interview with Entertainment Tonight that the end might be near for him.
What do you think of Yellowstone season 5 so far? Are you excited about its return next summer? Let us know in the comments!
I love Yellowstone and can’t for the next part. I have enjoyed every show I have seen. I didn’t like 1883 and so far I don’t like 1923. Go Yellowstone I love the show.
