The first episode of Buddy Daddies was as entertaining as it was cute, giving viewers a lot to look forward to this season. The series follows a makeshift family of two assassin roommates and their newly adopted Miri (voiced by Hina Kino), which will surely make for some quality antics. It’s too early to call it one of the best shows this Winter 2023, but with a promising premiere episode to start the season off, this anime is definitely one viewers should be excited about checking out.
- The episode opens with a shady jewelry deal. This is where we meet Kazuki and Rei, two assassins for hire. After a wild car chase, they apprehend the man responsible for smuggling the jewelry and asks him where he got it. He hands them a cell phone, saying he got his orders there.
- While interrogating the jewelry smuggler, Kazuki gets a call saying a young girl name Miri is sick and needs to be picked up from school. He and Rei fight over sending her to school sick and leave to pick her up only after shooting the jewelry smuggler.
- We flashback a few months earlier, when Kazuki and Rei first met Miri. It was the holidays, and Kazuki had just come home to find that his roommate, Rei, had adopted a cat. He scolds Rei for taking in a pet when he can barely take care of himself. The two argue, and Kazuki leaves with the cat.
- At dinner, Rei is obviously still upset, but Kazuki reminds him that they are in a dangerous line of work where either of them could die at any time. Even worse, they could get someone they care about hurt. We then see another flashback to Kazuki and a pregnant woman we can assume was his former lover.
- Kazuki bans Rei from bringing home more pets and then hands him their next assignment, where they will be going after the head of a human trafficking ring at his Christmas Party.
- Later Kazuki meets a man named Kyutaro at the cafe where he works. He asks for an ID and receives payment for the upcoming job. He asks Kyutaro to send half his money to the usual place. Kyutaro says he will try, but she’s never in the mood to take it.
- A girl no older than 4 rides on the train alone, exploring the city in search of her father. This is the first time we meet Miri.
- Rei and Kazuki devise a plot to get into the Christmas party by pretending to deliver a cake to the event. Kazuki manages to trick the guard into letting him in the elevator, but as the doors close, Miri runs in after him and the cake.
- Thinking he’s Santa, Miri asks Kazuki to help her find her dad, and he agrees. She’s so excited she runs out of the elevator as soon as the doors open, alerting them to the security upstairs. Rei shoots them both from where he’s hiding under the cake trolly.
- After shooting their way inside the party, guests flee as Rei heads straight for the target. Kazuki loses Miri in the rush, only to find the target is now holding her hostage.
- Kazuki runs up to save her, declaring that he is Miri’s father, as Rei manages to shoot the target and his guards.
- At home, Miri sleeps on their couch while Rei chastises Kazuki for being able to bring home a daughter when he wasn’t allowed to have a cat.

Predictions
The first episode of Buddy Daddies was more of a flashback or set-up episode, so it didn’t really give us a whole lot to work with. If we look back at the first few minutes, mixed with some backstory we got here and there, we may be able to put together some good guesses for episode 2.
- Kazuki received that phone from the jewelry smuggler early on. He said he had received his instructions from the phone, but that was all he knew. I think that phone and whoever is on the other end will end up playing a much bigger role in the overall season. Perhaps whoever was calling the shots will end up being a villain we see later.
- Considering Kazuki was allowed to take in a daughter, I won’t be surprised if we see Rei’s cat make an appearance next episode. In fact, I hope we do.
