We discuss predictions for the Crunchyroll anime series Bungo Stray Dogs Season 4 Episode 3 and include the release date and where to watch online.

Just when you think this anime can’t get any crazier, it always finds a way to shock and surprise its viewers with a new twist even Ranpo (Hiroshi Kamiya) couldn’t see coming. In Episode 2, we saw just how Yukichi (Rikiya Koyama) and Ranpo met. This week was all about solving their first real mystery together as we saw them figure out just who was behind the threats at the theater. It was even more exciting than the premiere, ending on a cliffhanger that will surely have fans on the edge of their seat until next week.

  • The episode opens with Yukichi and Ranpo at the theater, watching the play where someone is allegedly going to be murdered. Yukichi scopes the audience for potential suspects noticing a man near him.
  • Ranpo begins to grow, having already figured out the ending to the play early on. He wonders why anyone is even still watching the play when the outcome is obvious and begins to panic at the idea that everyone is in on something that he is not and he is being left out.
  • At intermission, Yukichi attempts to calm Ranpo down by explaining about gifted people and their abilities. He believes that Ranpo has the ability to see the truth, but can’t fully control it yet. In order to help, he gives Ranpo a fake pair of glasses that are meant to help focus his powers for him. It seems to work, reviving Ranpo’s confidence.
  • Ranpo turns his attention back to the case, thinking the murderer will still attempt to commit an attack during the show. He’s already figured out how everything will play out and asks Yukichi to keep an eye on the audience for him.
  •  An actor collapses on stage in a pool of blood. Yukichi runs to the stage and calls for an ambulance knowing this is not part of the show. He encourages the audience not to leave, assuming whoever tries to flee first is likely the culprit.
  • As the police show up, Yukichi overhears that an audience member has disappeared. He recognizes the description to fit that of a man he was seated near earlier and goes to search for him, hoping he does not get to Ranpo first.
  • Yukichi runs into Egawa, the theater owner, who says she has a message from Ranpo. Ranpo had deduced there were actually two culprits and that the first murder would essentially be used as bait for one criminal to drag out the other. She praises Ranpo’s abilities, telling Yukichi he’s the only one who sees the whole picture, before sending him back to his seat.
  • Ranpo appears on stage, launching into an explanation of how he deduced what happened. The man that Yukichi was sitting near and thought was the culprit, is actually a victim, Ranpo says. A curtain is drawn, revealing the audience member who disappeared earlier tied up on stage.
  • We then see the actor who was thought the die on stage earlier, is actually not dead. He faked his own death on stage, and now exposed, Murakami, begins to explain his motivation.
  • Ranpo leaves to speak with the police. Yukichi goes to talk to Egawa and Murakami as he is arrested. Murakami explains he planned the murder with the stagewright, but doesn’t know much about the man who was tied up on stage.
  • Just before the episode ends, a man runs up, telling Yukichi that the stagewright has been found murdered in a locked room.
  • We see that the officer who took Ranpo to the station may not be who he seems after all.

Last week I predicted that the actor Murakami could have more to do with this mystery than we thought, and while I was technically right, he doesn’t seem to be a significant player in the grand scheme of things. It was interesting to see that this play’s storyline might actually be bigger than expected. With that in mind, let’s see if I can predict anything correctly for next week.

  • It appears that Ranpo is about to be kidnapped, if not worse. The cop who kidnapped him is clearly more involved than we thought, and I think we will find out he’s probably connected to the tied-up man on stage.
  • Yukichi isn’t a detective, but I think he’ll notice pretty early on that Ranpo is in danger and go looking for him. However, it is unlikely that Ranpo is actually on his way to the police station, so it may be a while before Yukichi can actually locate him.
  • While Murakami probably isn’t as big a player as we thought, I’m turning my attention back to the theater owner, Egawa. I have a feeling she may be more involved, if not behind this, especially after the way she seemed so intrigued by Ranpo earlier. Maybe she’s the one who tipped off the police accomplice?
