Summary

Another good episode that progresses the plot well while leaning more on sentimental moments than action.

We recap the HiDive anime series Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Season 4 Episode 16, “Welf Crozzo: Shikou,” which contains spoilers.

In the last episode, Bell’s (Yoshitsugu Matsuoka)  party descended deeper into the dungeon, where they continued to encounter more monsters than ever. Their struggle inspired Welf (voiced by Yoshimasa Hosoya) to attempt crafting more swords, but at the cost of being able to travel or defend himself. As the party attempts to keep him safe, Bell and Ryuu Ryuu (Saori Hayami) on the lower floors awaiting help. Hopefully, Welf can craft enough magic swords in time to save Bell before it is too late.

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Season 4 Episode 16 Recap

The episode opens with Ryuu having another dream about her old familia. They get into a lengthy discussion on what justice means before we return to the present, where Ryuu wakes up and attempts to heal herself. Although she would’ve preferred to heal Bell, he says he would rather her be able to walk on her instead.

A Dire Situation

With limited weapons, magic, and significant injuries, things do not look promising. Ryuu assumes they are in an area of floor 37 known as The White Palace, but she cannot determine exactly where. Although it would be smarter to wait for help, Ryuu says this isn’t the kind of area regular explorers would easily stumble upon, making it harder for anyone to find them. No matter what, it looks like they are going to have to move.

Bell’s party is ambushed by monsters

While the group guards Welf, Bors wonders if it’s even possible to craft swords in the dungeon. Despite his aversion to the idea, the party knows this is the best chance they have to make it through the dungeon. Suddenly, a hoard of monsters begins charging toward them. The group engages in battle as Welf struggles to manipulate the ore.

Bell and Ryuu gather supplies

Bell and Ryuu decide to try ascending to a higher, safer floor. They’re lacking supplies, and Ryuu says they will have to take what they can from the corpses of other travelers. Bell gets upset, as he doesn’t want to desecrate the bodies. As he watches how hard this is for Ryuu as well, he realizes they have to do this to survive. The most valuable thing they manage to find is a map of the lower floors. With the map, Ryuu is confident she can lead them where they need to go.

As they gather what supplies they can, Bell and Ryuu learn more about the other adventurers, like how they died. They find a note for one of the adventurer’s children and agree to bring it back to the surface with them.

Why does Welf craft magic swords?

Welf continues to try forging the ore he found with little success. The longer it takes, the more he begins to doubt himself. Hallucinations of Hephaistos and himself appear, questioning him and his motives for crafting swords. Just then, Welf sees all of his friends struggling to support him and realizes that he’s doing this for them. It motivates him to not only try harder but to craft an indestructible sword.

Why does Hestia visit Hephaistos?

Hestia visits Hephaistos to tell her that her familia member, Tsubaki, traveled into the dungeon after Bell. She also asks if they can skip the payment on Bell’s knife this month, but Hephaistos refuses, saying it has saved his life countless times by now.

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Season 4 Episode 16 Ending Explained

As monsters begin closing in on them, Welf manages to take out several with a new, stronger, fire sword. He asks Cassandra to lend him some magic, before launching a huge, firey attack to kill the rest of the coming monsters. After seeing the attack, Cassandra realizes this sword may have been part of her prophecy before the group decides to continue on to find Bell.

There wasn’t much action in this episode, but it wasn’t missed as much as I thought. If anything, it was a nice break from all the trauma and despair of this season, although we still got some more emotional scenes than usual. Welf really got to stand out a lot this time, and I enjoyed seeing his growth, considering he’s been with Bell as long as he has.
