Summary

This adorably satisfying Christmas-themed episode shows how much Senpai has grown as a character and ends up being of the more organically funny episodes of the season.

We recap the Crunchyroll anime series Don’t Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro Season 2 Episode 6, “How Are Your Fortunes This Year, Senpai?,” which contains spoilers.

Things between Senpai and Nagatoro (voiced by Sumire Uesaka) got interesting last week when she came over to check on him at home. While it’s clear that Nagatoro and Senpai definitely have some sparks between them, it’s not often we see them acknowledge those feelings head-on. Although she didn’t get the chance to kiss Senpai, knowing that she’s open to it definitely changes the dynamic of their relationship a bit. Seeing how things progress from here will surely be fun to watch.

Don’t Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro Season 2 Episode 6 recap

The episode opens with Nagatoro asking her sister for Christmas gift suggestions. If it’s for no one special, Misaki suggests buying something meant to be used up, like food. However, if it’s for someone she likes, she says Nagatoro should try getting them something they’ll use regularly.

Senpai got Nagatoro a gift for Christmas but has no idea how to give it to her. He dreams about giving it to her in front of a well-lit tree, but when he wakes up, he decides to just give it to her at school. Before he gets a chance to give it to her in the hallway, Nagatoro’s friends pull them into the library.

How does Nagatoro get out of karaoke?

In the library, Nagatoro’s friends divide themselves into two groups: those with boyfriends and those without. Not wanting to spend Christmas Eve alone, the girls, without boyfriends, decide to go to karaoke together after school. Maki asks Nagatoro if she will join them, and she attempts to avoid the question. When another girl mistakes Senpai for her boyfriend, Nagatoro assures them that is not the case, prompting Maki to invite her out again.

As it becomes clearer that Nagatoro is looking for a reason not to go, Senpai says that he left something in his club room. Nagatoro uses the same excuse and escapes with Senpai instead.

A series of obstacles

Despite how hard Senpai and Nagatoro are trying to exchange gifts, something keeps getting in their way. From the art club president showing up naked to hiding from the school’s strictest professor in the nurses’ office. Although he does not want to do it there, Senpai reaches for his gift. Before he can give it to Nagatoro, they hear Sakura and her boyfriend hooking up on one of the beds in the nurses’ office and decide to leave.

Thinking they’ve finally escaped, Nagatoro and Senpai try heading to the rooftop, only to find it is occupied by a dozen other couples.

What did Senpai and Nagatoro get each other for Christmas?

After seeing how cold she is, Senpai decides to give Nagatoro her gift on the roof anyway in hopes the scarf he got her will keep her warm. Nagatoro gives Senpai her gift next, revealing that she got him a scarf as well.

Nagatoro and Senpai visit a shrine

On New Year’s Eve, Nagatoro calls Senpai and drops the hint that he should visit the Ishido shrine the next day. He shows up, wondering if he should’ve just invited Nagatoro directly when he doesn’t see her. Just before he leaves, she pops up to reveal that she actually took up a job at the shrine. As part of her job, she teaches him how to make a proper shrine visit and gives him a fortune scroll that tells him that nothing will happen in his relationship if he does not take action.

Don’t Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro Season 2 Episode 6 Ending Explained

Despite leaving the shrine at first, Senpai turns around to see Nagatoro again. Although he planned to ask her to visit the shrine together when she got off work, he chickens out and purchases a good luck charm instead. In the end, all he manages is an awkward “I’ll be waiting” before running off. After making fun of him through text, Nagatoro tells him to give her 20 minutes.

As they head into the shrine together this time, Senpai finally realizes that this is actually a matchmaking shrine. She teases him about making a wish to go out with her at the shrine, to which Senpai replies that if he were going to ask her out, he would rather not leave his chances up to the gods and would rather make it happen himself. The episode ends with them telling each other what they wished for and Nagatoro teasing Senpai after she tells him she jokingly wished to one day be his bride.

One of the best aspects of this show is Senpai’s growth as a character, and any episode that highlights that tends to be a pretty good one, especially in terms of progressing the romantic aspects of this relationship. When they first started hanging out, Senpai and Nagatoro were not exactly equal. Seeing him take initiative and move more confidently keeps the story from feeling bland or repetitive. It’s not just Senpai, though, as it’s clear all of the characters have changed since we first met them, which makes it easy to get invested in their stories.

The pacing in this episode was perfect, especially in the first half. They really built up the anticipation for the gift exchange, and the reveal that they had gotten the same gifts was both cute and hilarious. Seeing them wear the scarves for the rest of the episode was also a nice added touch. With each episode, it feels like the focus is less on the teasing and more on building a quality slice-of-life romance anime, and I like the direction it’s going in.
