Charlie Cale (Natasha Lyonne) continues to move around the US, taking on odd jobs, while living her life as a fugitive and amateur detective. In “Time of the Monkey”, Charlie finds herself at Mossy Oaks retirement community, where she witnesses yet another murder. This time, Charlie is in real danger though, as the killers grow suspicious of our intrepid hero. It’s an enthralling entry, crammed full of surprising twists and turns. Here’s what happened in Poker Face Episode 5:
- Rebellious residents Joyce and Irene watch a man called Ben join the community. Instantly, they plot his death. Joyce collects sodium nitrate to poison the man and Irene nabs some syringes. They orchestrate their plan, Irene climbs into Ben’s room and injects him with the poison. She also takes his wristband, so as not to raise any suspicion.
- The ladies join the group heading on a zoo trip. At the zoo, Joyce tasers Irene, simulating a heart attack. The nursing staff rush into Ben’s room, but they cannot revive him. The party return to the community to find Ben dead.
- Reverting back to a week earlier, Charlie is a cleaner at the retirement community. She befriends Irene and Joyce. They tell her how they were political prisoners for decades. How they initially met a man called Gabriel, who changed their lives forever. He was their leader and their lover. But one day their group were raided by the police. Irene was shot, losing the feeling in her legs and Gabriel was never seen again.
- Ben’s nephew drops him off at Mossy Oaks. Ben meets with Irene and Joyce, revealing himself to be Gabriel. He confesses to them about working with the police. He asks for their forgiveness. They forgive him but in secret plan his demise.
- Charlie tags along for the zoo and hears Irene and Joyce’s lies. She then attends Ben’s funeral and meets the nephew. He is actually Luca Clark, an FBI agent. Ben was in witness protection and Luca was assigned to his case. Charlie figures it out, Ben is Gabriel.
- The FBI arrest Irene and Joyce, but they have a solid alibi. Luca warns Charlie to stay away from them, they are terrorists, who tried to bomb a high school.
- Charlie now suspects Irene and Joyce. She finds out about the sodium nitrate and calls Luca. Joyce was supplied the poison from the gardener. She also thinks they faked the time of death using the taser.
- Betty saw them using the taser at the zoo and she is killed for her knowledge.
- Charlie confronts Irene and Joyce. They attack Charlie and try to poison her. She tasers herself, the nursing staff and FBI come rushing in and arrest the terrorists.
- Luca asks Charlie to join the FBI, but she declines. Then Charlie’s buggy is blown up. She just escapes with her life.

- I was surprised Charlie didn’t confide in Luca about her current situation. She could have gotten herself into witness protection or at least received some advice or a reference from the agent. Obviously, she believes that her enemies would track her down wherever she was, but it felt like a missed opportunity.
- Charlie will continue to move around the country, taking on odd jobs and solving murders along the way. She seems quite safe at the moment, but her interactions will soon give her away. Cliff will be back on her tail in no time at all.
- The next episode seems to be related to the theater. This should make for an exciting installment, one set within the devious theater world.
