Created and written by Michael and Paul Clarkson, the British teen horror series Red Rose landed on Netflix in February 2023 after its summer 2022 run on BBC Three. Gaining immediate popularity, fans will be dismayed to learn that there’s still no update on Season 2.

Set in Bolton, U.K., the series follows Rochelle (Isis Hainsworth), a recently bereaved teen whose life starts to unravel after downloading the titular Red Rose app. At first, she thinks the strange app can help get her life in order before things take a strikingly nefarious turn for Rochelle and her entire group of friends.

Will there be a season 2 of Red Rose?

There’s no news of a second season from the BBC or Netflix. The show had its Netflix premiere in February 2023, and company executives will already have viewership numbers to make a decision. The longer there’s no news, the likelier that this TV show has been canceled.

Red Rose might as well get at least one more season, the critics loved it, and the show has a thrilling and very relevant story. Series dealing with teen issues usually do well on Netflix.

Critical Response for Red Rose

Response to Red Rose has been mixed. The show earned an excellent approval rating of 100% from Rotten Tomatoes critics, while the audience score of 53% is substantially lower. On IMDB, the series averaged a relatively low score of 6.3/10 from audience members, making this one of those rare shows where there’s a substantial discrepancy between viewers’ and critics’ opinions.

Jonathan Wilson wrote for Ready Steady Cut:

“If you can overlook the slightly dated overall aesthetic, feel, and central message, and horror that wavers in and out of focus, there’s a pretty solid story of grief, social navigation, and the allure of exploitative technology here if you’re looking for it.”

As the series finale ended with a somewhat ambiguous mini-cliffhanger, it’s clear the Clarkson twins intended to leave the door open for future seasons. The show was originally a BBC Three series but has now moved to Netflix. Is the streaming giant planning to order another season of the teen horror show?
