Summary
The Reluctant Traveler has similar beats to other reality shows of this nature, but Eugene Levy’s personality makes it worth watching.
Comedic legend Eugene Levy has been making us laugh for many years. In the Apple TV+ reality series, The Reluctant Traveler, we follow him traveling worldwide, exploring new cities, cultures, and people. Is the eight-part series worth checking out? Let’s dive in.
The Reluctant Traveler Season 1 Review and Plot Summary
Early on, we find that Levy isn’t fond of traveling, but he is setting out on this journey to explore new things at 75. Throughout each episode, Levy meets someone to help him navigate the city or country he is in and partake in some of the local activities. Levy narrates some parts of the story; in others, we see him interact with those around him. Another thing he does is stay in a fancy little resort or hotel while in that particular place.
The main stand out is the beautiful places that Levy visits and how gorgeous some resorts he stayed in are, from the freezing cold of Finland to a resort built in a forest in Costa Rica to my favorite, the Hoshinoya hotel in Toyko. You were left with your jaw on the floor several times because of the sights we were seeing. I loved how they used a variety of places, and none of them were the same.
This series doesn’t reinvent any wheel because we’ve seen other reality series explore the world. However, it does set itself apart with the incredible personality of Eugene Levy. One thing I loved was it felt like his reactions to things were authentic and not fake. He genuinely felt like someone who was not a fan of most of the things he did but took the risk and did them anyway. Quite a lesson we could learn from the series. Levy has some incredible comedic timing that stands out and is a big reason why the show is worth watching.
My Favorite episode of The Reluctant Traveler?
Tokyo. This was a no-brainer for me because Toyko is at the top of my list of places I want to visit. From Levy’s breathtaking hotel stay at the Hoshinoya to wandering Old Toyko to the stunning sights and style of the city, my want to see this city only grew after watching this episode.
Is The Reluctant Traveler Season 1 good?
Yes, it is good, but it comes with slight reservations. Overall, The Reluctant Traveler is an easy binge, but you can also pick and choose which cities or countries you want to explore with Levy without watching the entire season. That said, one thing I hope everyone takes away from the season is to experience life more. We aren’t meant to stay in one place but to travel where we can see things that are amazing and larger than life.
