The Consultant is a dark comedy series by Tony Basgallop (Servant), based on the novel of the same name written by Bentley Little. The premiere was directed by Matt Shakman (WandaVision), who also serves as an executive producer, alongside the show’s star, Hollywood actor Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds).
The show uses a similar style to Basgallop’s other hit mystery series, with sarcastic humor and plenty of ambiguous mysteries for viewers to over-analyze and attempt to solve. And just like the Apple Original series Servant, audiences will be left mystified, this time by the central character of Regus Patoff and his many tantalizing secrets.
Regus Patoff is the Consultant for the show’s title, played by Christoph Waltz. Interestingly, this is one of the German actor’s first forays into the English-speaking TV world since his rise to fame, working with Quentin Tarantino in both Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained. Regus is hired to run CompWare after its founder Sang Woo is killed. Regus uses unusual yet effective techniques to build the business back up after the tragic death of its creator and CEO.
The other prominent cast members include Elaine Hayman (Brittany O’Grady), Sang’s creative liaison, and Craig Horne (Nat Wolff), a coder who plans to save the company with a new mobile game. Regus manipulates these two employees to do his bidding while he goes about his suspicious out-of-hours exploits. Regus is a mysterious individual who leaves a trail of death and destruction in his wake.
Will The Consultant be a hit for Prime Video, following Tony Basgallop’s successes with Servant at Apple TV+, or will it just be another one-off series canceled before its time by its streaming platform? Let’s discuss the renewal status of The Consultant.
Will there be a season 2 of The Consultant – renewed or canceled status
The renewal status of The Consultant is still to be confirmed and is currently pending over at Prime Video HQ. The series has the potential to be every bit as successful as Basgallop’s last creation, Servant, which ran for four seasons on Apple TV+. Yet the first season of The Consultant isn’t as engaging or compelling as Servant was, which could mean a lack of overall engagement from viewers. The Consultant puts forth many mysteries and an array of cleverly formed twists, but whether it will grip viewers to the same degree remains to be seen.
On the other hand, there are many reasons why Prime Video would renew The Consultant for a second season. Christoph Waltz is a great selling point, the Academy Award-winning actor is a big draw for the series, and his portrayal of Regus Patoff is fascinating. While the finale leaves many questions unanswered, and numerous plot points remain open-ended. There’s a bigger world to be explored, and we have only just scratched the surface of Regus and his seedy past. You could even make an anthology series out of this specific plot, with each season focusing on Regus at a different company with the overarching mysteries slowly being revealed over multiple seasons.
There is lots of potential for a second season, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Prime Video announces it in the coming weeks. As always, though, we will keep you posted on any updates in the pending renewal of The Consultant.
How many seasons of The Consultant are there?
