Perry Mason has been a literary and TV icon for the last century, but his prestige makeover on HBO in 2020 was a new look for the character, bringing with it a new backstory, tone, and format. With handsome period production and a season-long mystery, not to mention an overabundance of HBO’s trademark adults-only grit, the first season was a compelling and well-acted mystery and we’re back for more in the anticipated sophomore outing.
Here’s what happened in Perry Mason Season 2 Episode 1:
- We were reintroduced to Mason struggling with drink, impulsiveness, lingering trauma, the events of the first season, and the ethical compromises he’s having to make in the process of practicing civil law, which pays the bills but not without cost.
- Mason was forced to represent a grocery tycoon in his efforts to ruin an entrepreneurial former employee. He won the case, but at the expense of his morals.
- We were also introduced to the shady oil magnate Lynell and his useless son Brooks, who arranged the burning and subsequent sinking of a Luxe casino barge. He was also attempting to set up a local baseball team, much to his father’s chagrin.
- At the end of the episode, Brooks was found dead, having been shot through the eye and left in his car.
