Rain Dogs is a new HBO dramedy from BBC One and Sid Gentle Films Ltd about a mother and her daughter trying to navigate a life of British poverty while also exploring a complex relationship with a privileged gay man fresh out of prison. Daisy May Cooper fronts the show as Costello, mother to ten-year-old Iris, and Jack Farthing plays opposite her as the charming but erratic and perhaps dangerous Selby.
This is a very good show that could well become extremely popular over the season, and if nothing else it might reinforce the point that Daisy May Cooper should be in everything.
Anyway, here’s what happened in Rain Dogs Season 1, Episode 1:
- Costello and Iris were evicted from their flat and forced to try and find a place to stay.
- After trying their luck with scratch cards, Costello takes a seemingly kind offer from a man named Brett, who offers them both a room. However, he turns out to be a predator.
- Selby is released from prison (with a longstanding debt to a fellow inmate) and tries to recoup his fortunes with mahjong.
- Costello asks Selby to save her from Brett, which he does.
- At the end of the episode Selby uses his mahjong winnings to pay off Costello’s debt on the flat so she and Iris have a place to stay.

Predictions
There is no official synopsis available for the episode, but we can make some logical assumptions:
- Costello and Iris will find themselves displaced again, or at least facing the imminent possibility of displacement.
- Costello will need to rely on Selby more and more, which might backfire on her.
- We should hopefully get some backstory on Costello’s relationship with Selby and how he ended up in prison.
