We recap the Netflix series You Season 4 Episode 7, “Good Man, Cruel World,” which contains spoilers.

Buckle up; this is where season 4 of You gets wild. Episodes 1 to 6 saw poor Joe Goldberg (played by Penn Badgley) under an assumed identity turning a new leaf. He lets Marienne (Tati Gabrielle) go; he’s been bettering himself and trying to save a group of wealthy aristocrats from a serial killer who just so happens to be stalking him. Joe wants to be a good man in a cruel world. He needs to think of himself as innocent. But the truth is, he’s not.

You Season 4 Episode 7 Recap

At the start of episode 7, Joe is happy. He and Kate are thoroughly enjoying their first real date. They playfully plan their future together and buy food from his usual Indian take-out; she’s not impressed with the food, but she’s enjoying Joe’s company. The following day, Kate’s boogeyman, aka her father, Tom Lockwood, is set to visit London. While her original plan was to flee the city and avoid Tom, Kate lets Joe convince her to have dinner with him instead. Rhys wants Tom dead, but Joe is undecided.

Joe meets Kate’s father

As they walk into the restaurant to meet her father, Kate warns Joe that Tom Lockwood is “pure evil” and powerful but also very charming, down to Earth, and likable. After shaking Tom’s hand, Joe realizes he might be out of depth.

Not only has Tom uncovered his true identity, but he also suspects Joe of killing his beloved late wife, Love Quinn. Complicating things further, Tom makes Kate an offer she struggles to refuse – Her very own art museum in New York!

By the end of dinner, Joe decides against killing Tom. Not out of the kindness of his heart, but because Tom wants to bring Rhys down, politically, of course. As it turns out, Rhy’s popular rags to riches memoir is mostly an “embellishment.”

Meanwhile, a newly single Lady Pheobe struggles to cope with recent events. She’s been firing her staff for the smallest infractions and asked to stay with Kate because she no longer feels safe in her own home. Recognizing the signs of PTSD, Kate arranges for a discrete visit to a mental health facility.

Lady Pheobe is not OK

As Kate and Pheobe are about to head towards the hospital, Adam shows up begging to see his ex. He’s lost everything (apart from the Aston Martin) and had to sleep on a park bench, where even the dogs are on crack. Despite Kate’s protests, Pheobe agrees to let Adam drive her to the mental health hospital. But they don’t make it that far. When Kate sees the lovebirds again, they’re “off their trolleys” (that means very drunk) and engaged to be married. To say Kate is concerned would be an understatement.

Why does Rhys blackmail Joe?

Joe’s resolve not to murder Kate’s dad doesn’t last long. Initially, he plans to get a video recording of Rhys admitting to being the Eat the Rich Killer. Instead, he learns that Rhys somehow got his grubby little hands on Marienne and is holding her hostage somewhere.

Reluctantly, Joe arranges a meeting with Tom at the university, the only camera-free place in London he knows of. But once inside the library, Tom makes Joe an offer he can’t refuse. After the story about his fake memoir was leaked, Rhys Montrose left London for the quiet pastures of his ex-wife’s countryside home. There are no cameras there, so Joe could quickly get rid of his nemesis.

In return for getting rid of Rhys, Mr. Lockwood is willing to use his influence and eliminate any stateside legal issues preventing Joe from living as himself. Is Tom using Joe to eliminate a politician that’s bad for business? Probably.

Meanwhile, Nadia’s suspicion of Professor Moore keeps growing. It doesn’t help that he falls right into her trap by pretending to have read her draft when he didn’t. But when her boyfriend sends some photos of Joe, his journalist dad retrieved from Dawn’s apartment, she can’t help herself from snooping. She sneaks inside his apartment and finds a strange-looking key hidden inside a copy of the Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (the most obvious example of foreshadowing we’ve seen so far in the series).

You Season 4 Episode 7 Ending Explained

Where is Marianne?

Ready to finally end Rhys’s harassment and save Marienne, Joe makes his way to the address Tom gave him. He knocks, and Rhys answers the door but fails to recognize him before unsuccessfully trying to slam the door shut. Joe then takes Mr. Montrose to his garage, ties him up, and tortures him for information about Marienne’s whereabouts. The torture scene is brutal and hard to watch, yet Mr. Montrose insists he has no idea what Joe’s on about. Blinded by rage, Joe strangles poor Rhys to death.

He gets little time to process what just happened before Rhys appears out of nowhere wearing a snazzy suit and comments on the “shocking amount of military-grade ball torture” Joe used on him. Well, the him that’s dead in a chair. What Rhys says next is even more shocking than his post-mortem appearance: “We really do have Marienne in a cage.”

And to confirm it, the episode ends with Nadia snooping, leading her to an abandoned building. The key in the book opened the door to the basement. In the basement, she finds one of that high-tech impossible to break out of glass cages. Yes, the iconic You glass cage Joe keeps building everywhere he goes. Inside the cage, she sees Marianne. Was she there the whole time? How does Joe not remember putting her there?
