We recap the Apple TV+ series Extrapolations Season 1 Episode 4, “2059 pt 1,” which contains spoilers.
“2059 pt 1” is a slight improvement for Extrapolations. The episode features a storyline ripped from Greek mythology that pits son versus father with the world’s fate in the balance. The episode is more interesting than entertaining, but the story does have three coherent acts that lead to a satisfying finale.

Jonathan Chopin (Edward Norton) watches, with dozens of his friends and family members, that the President (Cherry Jones) will sign the CIT 2 Climate Intervention Treaty and extend the moratorium on geoengineering or any act to manipulate the climate artificially. This is good news for Jonathan, who helped consult the President on this decision. However, this will come at a cost to his family.
Who is Rowan?
Jonathan has a son named Rowan (The Many Saints of Newark‘s Michael Gandolfini0), who is 22 years old. At the party, he begins criticizing Jonathan that they just doomed the planet. Jonathan argues that he is trying to ensure everyone’s future.
We have your classic story of father versus son in Greek mythology, like Odysseus and Telemachus. Rowan believes artificially manipulating the planet is the only way to save it, while Jonathan thinks the risks are too significant.
Rowan goes off the grid for the next few weeks and will not return his father’s calls, even on his father’s day. To help find him, Jonathan calls a friend, who appears to be an Alpha Industries employee, Martha Russell (played by Diane Lane). She locates him by looking into Rowan’s Alpha social media accounts or a woman he refers to, which is unclear. He (or they) is in Djibouti. Who is Rowan with?
Who is Gita Mishra?
Gita Mishra is Jonathan’s ex-wife and owns the advanced innovation company New Sky Initiatives (NSI). She has built a top-secret carbon-neutral plane that flies itself and is ready for the test flight. She named it the Rowan, after her ex-stepson, who happens to be at the hangar with her.
In a Shark Tank-like demonstration, she turns the tables and tells everyone that she is operating the plane herself. Between a conversation with Jonathan and Martha, we also learn that Bilton may buy a couple of the aircraft if things go well.

They also allude to they may be using Alpha batteries. Knowing Gita’s history with geoengineering, Jonathan’s radar is up. He asks Martha if Alpha Chemical sold calcium carbonate, hydrogen sulfide, and sulfur oxide.
Could Gita be planning to change the climate on earth artificially?
Gita is flying with a series of self-flying NSI planes. Her team on the ground now alerts her that DC, NATO, and AFRICOM are now aware of her top-secret mission. They move their aircraft above the radar, and Gita tells Rowan to leave before his father is alerted. Jonathan calls the FBI, and AFRICOM warns the President.
What is Jonathan afraid will happen?
During a meeting with the President, Jonathan fears the Gita will change rain patterns, leading to crop failures and more flooding. These types of extreme weather events will lead to mass migration. (This is nothing new, as you can look back at history from where earthquakes and hurricanes cause large groups of refugees to migrate to different countries).
Later, the President receives a call from Bilton and tells him how their beliefs on geoengineering align. She wants him to perform a “cover for action,” which we interpret as the United States cannot get involved, but maybe Alpha Industries can.

Why was Grita killed?
It is not said how Grita’s plane was shot out of the sky, but the implication is that Bilton shot down her plane near the coast.
Where it is seen near the sea wall that Grita’s mother built. Rowan now knows that her aircraft has been destroyed. He activates thousands of preset drones to fly and dry the chemicals from the sky, beginning climate manipulation.
