In the penultimate installment of Shrinking Season 1, the three leading therapists of the series start to make positive steps forward. Jimmy (Jason Segel) starts to parent Alice (Lukita Maxwell) properly at home while making progress at work and in his friendship groups. Gaby (Jessica Williams) concentrates on her career, and Paul (Harrison Ford) finally chooses family over work. It’s another hilarious episode, with some clever, surprise twists lurking within the usual formula. Here’s what happened in Shrinking Season 1 Episode 9:
- Jimmy tells his patient to move forwards, and he finally spreads his mother’s ashes. Jimmy takes on his own advice and clears out his dead wife’s belongings.
- Paul is to receive a career achievement award but worries it is a sign of his life being over. His friends suggest who he should invite to the ceremony. Gaby says his new girlfriend, Julie, Jimmy suggests his daughter Meg and her family.
- Sean gets a new job working in an office with his father but still wants to pursue the catering business idea. Alice pushes him to pitch the idea to Liz and the recently retired Derek.
- Gaby meets up with Nico to apologize for the art show disaster. Nico wants to get back with Gaby, though. She nearly sleeps with him but chooses Jimmy instead.
- Jimmy struggles to read his speech for Brian’s wedding. He chokes up every time he practices. Brian is stressed but soldiers on. He asks his dad to be his best man, but he declines.
- Paul invites Meg and the family on a trip to Las Vegas. She is excited to go but clashes with her son’s school play. Paul says it has to be this weekend because of the ceremony. Meg is annoyed he is choosing work over his family once again.
- Gaby asks Paul for a recommendation letter as she is applying for a professorship. He says he will sign whatever she writes.
- Alice tells Paul that her father is finally stepping up and doing really well. Jimmy invites Alice to visit Tia’s grave, but she declines. Jimmy goes alone.
- Sean pitches to Liz, and she begrudgingly accepts. However, Liz wants to be more involved, but Sean says he has it all covered.
- Paul invites Julie to the award ceremony, but they attend the school play together instead. Meg is over the moon and holds her father’s hand.
- Jimmy takes off his wedding ring for the first time. Alice starts to bond with Jimmy but realizes she has forgotten her mother’s birthday. She storms off, upset.
