Great Expectations had its two-episode premiere with us following the story of a young orphan who suddenly becomes a benefactor allowing him to enter high society. Here is everything that happened in season 1, episodes 1 and 2.
- We meet Pip in 1839 London, where he attempts to kill himself by tying a rope around his neck and jumping off a bridge.
- Then, we rewound seven years to meet young Pip, who lives with his sister and her husband. Pip wanted to visit his parents during Christmas, but his sister Sara said it was unsafe.
- Later that night, Pip visited his parent’s gravesite and ran into a man (Maywitch) who had recently escaped prison. Maywitch tells him he must bring him food and drink, or he will kill his whole family.
- Of course, Pip obliges, and because he did when Maywitch and Compeyson are found and arrested, Maywitch doesn’t rat him out.
- Mr. Pumblechuck comes to Pip’s household with a proposal for his sister. He stated that Miss Havisham was hunting for a young man, and Pip was just the right boy for the job.
- Upon arriving at the Havisham household, we meet Estella, a girl he is to impress.
- Miss Havisham states that she wants to watch Pip and Estella play together.
- Each time Pip goes and visits the Havisham household, he must learn new things to become a gentleman. Miss Havisham wants him to fall in love with Estella.
- Pip is to learn to dance, ride horses, box, and have sex. So for his 18th birthday, Miss Havisham buys Pip a good time with Mrs. Givens.
- Then, he is to learn french, and he enlists his friend and school-smart kid Biddy to help him with it. Throughout the second episode, she helps him with everything.
- After the society ball goes well, Miss Havisham gives Pip some stuff to sell off to buy himself a new wardrobe to impress Estella. As a result of not being in love, this is his next task.
- After getting the money he needs, Pip feels himself with the new outfit he purchased, and everyone around town notices.
- However, upon returning to Miss Havisham’s, Estella says his education is complete. A very confused Pip had no clue what he did wrong.
- The episode ended with Pip drinking at a bar and Jaggers on the hunt looking for him.
Great Expectations Season 1 Episode 3 Release Date
Episode 3 will be released on FX and Hulu on April 2, 2023. Episode 3 will have a run time of 56 minutes.
