Copycat Killer is adapted from a novel by prolific Japanese author Miyuki Miyabe and produced by Greener Grass Production for Netflix, a platform not exactly hurting for high-quality crime thrillers but that nonetheless is always looking to appease profitable markets.
The plot, which revolves around a cat-and-mouse battle between a dogged, upright prosecutor and a showman serial killer, is familiar for the genre but executed very well, with a game cast that’ll be especially appealing to those in Taiwan and other regional markets.

The slow-burn debauchery is reminiscent of Mindhunter, in an odd way, grounded horror that revels in the potential depravity of human beings. Will there be a Copycat Killer Season 2 on Netflix?

At the time of writing Copycat Killer has not been renewed for a second season.
However, the future looks unusually bright for this one. As mentioned above it’s adapted from the work of Miyuki Miyabe, whose catalog has already been widely translated into film and TV and is a rich mine of inspiration for subsequent crime series that may very well be of interest to the Big N.
Also as mentioned above, the streamer is always looking to tap into potentially profitable markets, very much like Taiwan.
Of course, viewing figures will no doubt matter despite all these circumstances, but it seems Netflix are banking on the show’s success given they have clearly invested a fair amount into the marketing. It’ll almost certainly be very popular, and with all of the above elements also being considered, one doesn’t imagine Copycat Killer will need to be as much of a runaway success as some other shows in order to secure its future.
