Where is Fred Lamb now? We discuss the man that was tied to the murder case of Shelli Wiley and where he is now.

True crime is the focus of this article, and one of the most interesting subgenres in the category is the cold case files.

As well as the streaming platforms clamoring over each other to find new shows on the subject, there are also several highly entertaining podcasts that cover the subject.

One such entry is Serial: The Coldest Case in Laramie, which takes a deep dive into a decades-old murder in Wyoming, leaving police officers confounded by the murder of a 22-year-old college student called Shelli Wiley.

The case would be reignited by new evidence that would finally link a suspect to the crime. If this is a case you have heard of before, we can now bring you some insight into the new developments that finally led to an open-ended conclusion to this disturbing case.

Where is Fred Lamb now?

Who is Fred Lamb?

Fredrick James Lamb worked and lived just outside of Laramie, Wyoming, where he lived with his wife, Linda, and their child. From 1974 to 1985, he was employed as a Sheriff’s Deputy with the Albany County Sheriff’s Office, having previously worked as an officer at the Laramie Police Department.

Fred could often be found at a truck joint named Foster’s with fellow law enforcement officers, and it was here that 22-year-old Shelli Wiley worked as a waitress until her tragic murder on October 20, 1985.

What was Fred Lamb accused of?

Fred’s name would surface as a suspect in the initial investigation of the murder of Shelli Wiley. He knew the victim, who had been brutally stabbed to death, then left in a burning apartment, and at the time of the horrific crime, he was staying with a friend in the same block where the crime took place in.

A neighbor would knock on the door of the apartment that Fred was staying in when it was noticed that Shelli’s room was on fire. The neighbor would ask for help and later state that Fred was nonchalant, lacking urgency in providing aid to the situation.

Police would question Fred, and there was a report that noted he had a cut on his hand, and there would be a blood spatter on his apartment door. On the podcast, Shelli’s roommate claimed a matchbook had been found in Fred’s truck with a bloodied thumbprint.

However, he would be cleared of suspicion, and it would be thirty-one years later, in 2016, before a blood specimen at the crime scene would be found to match Fred’s, leading to his arrest. Fred was charged with first-degree murder and first-degree arson.

What happened to Fred after his arrest?

Investigators eventually found no relevant evidence tying Fred to Shelli’s death, and the charges against him were dismissed in early 2017. Fred’s criminal record was removed from the public domain and expunged in November of the same year.

Investigators would put this down to a “temporary procedural hiccup,” but it is note-worth that no charges have been refiled against Fred up till April 2023.

Is Fred Lamb alive today?

Yes, the 71-year-old is still with his wife, and they would appear in a rare interview on the podcast covering the case. With no social media presence, the couple would reinforce that Fred was innocent of wrongdoing and had been framed for the crime.

Fred had always claimed he was innocent of the crime and still lives in Laramie, Wyoming.
