The very title, The Evil Dead, still brings a shiver to moviegoers of a particular era.
Branded in the UK as a video nasty when it was released to the home video market in the 1980s, the film achieved a notoriety that still resonates with fans of the franchise.
Although, in retrospect, the film’s effects in the original have dated, some moments of horror hold up, particularly the practical effects and makeup.
There was a soft reboot in 2013 that didn’t go anywhere, and that brings us to 2023 and Evil Dead Rise.
Fans of the franchise are wondering if this latest entry will match the levels of terror of the original, so this article, plucked from the very depths of the Book of the Dead, will answer the question: what is the age rating for Evil Dead Rise?
What is the Age Rating for Evil Dead Rise?
In the US, the film is rated R. In the UK, the film has an 18 rating. This film is not kid-friendly and is not suitable for children.
Why is Evil Dead Rise Rated R?
Although there seem to be some scenes of mild nudity in the film, the R rating looks firmly in place due to the disturbing scenes and violence.
The trailer shows some shocking imagery, including a scalping, scenes of children being terrified and threatened, gruesome practical makeup effects, a drill being pushed in close up to an eye, a cheese grater being used against a leg, a woman eating glass, a chainsaw (of course) being wielded as a weapon, someone on fire in a kitchen, a The Shining-like river of blood in a house, and the usual twisted and contorted limbs of a poor woman that seems possessed by the demons from the book.
It seems that the writer and director, Lee Cronin, has gone all out in the gore and scare effects for this entry, and Bruce Campbell himself has said it is the most disturbing film in the series to date.
What is the plot for Evil Dead Rise?
As you might expect from this kind of horror, the story itself is possibly secondary to the scares, but as it stands, the film takes action away from the usual cabin in the woods setting and puts it into a cityscape.
Evil Dead Rise is a twisted and disturbing tale of two estranged sisters, played by Alyssa Sutherland and Lily Sullivan, who reunite, but the family meeting is interrupted by the rise of flesh-possessing demons. The family is thrown into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of the family imaginable.
The film was originally intended to be a streaming release on HBO Max, but the test screenings did very well, leading to the film receiving a theatrical release.
Age should be 20+ Age
