10 Games like RimWorld
State of Decay 2 (2018)
A zombie survival game, players have to scavenge for resources to outlive the apocalypse instead of fighting it. Players can cooperate with others online or go it alone. Each community has people with special skills, traits, and basic personalities, who try to foster an attachment to society.
This War of Mine (2014)
Instead of playing as an elite killing machine, This War of Mine instead puts players in the perspective of civilians trapped in a besieged city, having to scavenge for food and water. Gamers must put aside their violent streak and help these people make it to the end of the war.
Players take control of a group of travelers who have been exiled (hence the name) and want to restart their life on a new piece of land. Like the previous games, there is an emphasis on resource management and building up a city.
Stardew Valley (2016)
While noticeably less violent than RimWorld, Stardew Valley’s base building and strategic farming will still entice players who fell in love with RimWorld. This game sees players take over their deceased Grandfather’s farm, which has become dilapidated without anyone maintaining it.
Set in an alternate 1886 where eruptions of Krakatoa and Mount Tambora and other unknown factors cause the diming of the Sun, leading to a volcanic winter, Frostpunk asks players to build a city in this tough environment. But the choices are even tougher, with the game demanding the player make difficult but necessary decisions to stop their citizens from freezing to death.
While Factorio sounds simple — players build factories — 0ptimizing creations and layouts to ensure the quickest build times possible is the challenge. What starts as a small factory quickly grows in size, and players have to manage a huge space. It’s another one of the few games that doesn’t involve much violence, a rarity in games.
Dwarf Fortress (2006)
Dwarf Fortress combines rogue-like elements with a survival strategy, with players managing a cave of dwarves and stopping them from falling into starvation or becoming a dragon’s meal. As players lose this game, they’ll be able to bring their experience to the next play-through.
Oxygen Not Included (2019)
In a space-colony survival simulator, players have to help their crew master science, overcome strange new life forms and harness the power of incredible technology if they are going to not only survive their environment but thrive in it too. With more childlike graphics than some others on this list, Oxygen Not Included is still for all to enjoy.
Prison Architect (2015)
For anyone wanting to prove they can design a better prison system than the government, Prison Architect is that chance. Players take on the prison system and build their own penitentiary, adding personal touches to it. Prisons can be small and simple or massive and complex. It’s up to the player.
Surviving Mars (2018)
As the title implies, Surviving Mars tasks players with colonizing and surviving on the red planet. Starting out, gamers will choose a space agency to fund their expedition and attempt to balance keeping colonists alive with expanding their base and making Mars more habitable for humanity.
