Undertale is a 2015 game developed by Toby Fox. The player takes control of a child, helping escape a frightening world of monsters they’ve unwittingly fallen into. With beats that subvert players’ expectations, meta moments, and multiple endings, Undertale has become a mainstay in gaming culture.

Featuring RPG elements, bullet hell shooter mechanics, and a unique approach to humor, there’s a lot to like. And, if you’re looking for games that are in any way similar to Undertale, here are ten games that you must play.

10 Games like Undertale

The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe (2022)

A remake of The Stanley Parable, this game once again explores the theme of free will. The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe adds more content for the player to frustrate the narrator. Featuring a similar level of meta gameplay to Undertale, the humourous dialogue will amuse anyone who likes it. There are nearly 20 possible endings, encouraging many playthroughs to see them all.

The Binding of Isaac (2011)

Inspired by the biblical story of the same name, The Binding of Isaac is a roguelike where no two runs are the same, similar to Unndertale’s random encounters and multiple endings. Featuring dark themes of abuse and violence, anyone who enjoyed Undertale’s similar macabre ideas of death is bound to like this game.

A Hat In Time (2017)

Featuring a cast of whimsical characters with memorable and expressive personalities, A Hat In Time is a platformer where gamers must help a little alien girl get home. With charming graphics and a memorable story, A Hat In Time is a must-play for anyone who liked Undertale.

Oxenfree (2016)

In a supernatural, narrative-based game, players take control of Alex, a teen visiting an island with friends. But as their trip goes on, strange things begin to happen, and the player must make choices that will determine where the story goes. With hand-drawn graphics and an effective story, players won’t be able to resist this game.

Pony Island (2016)

Another game that likes to get meta and subvert players’ expectations, Pony Island is a puzzle platformer with a retro, 8-bit aesthetic. The devil himself has hacked the game’s code, so players must fight the hordes of evil minions he sends. But as the game progresses, all isn’t what it seems.

Undertale similarly gets meta in its storytelling and subverts players’ expectations, so gamers will enjoy Pony Island.

Deltarune Chapter 1 (2018)

Created by Toby Fox, the same man who made Undertale, it’s unsurprising the two games are similar. Featuring turn-based combat, quirky characters, and other elements players came to love about Undertale, this game deserves attention from anyone who is looking for something similar.

Gamers will take on the role of Kris, a human who falls into the world of Deltarune, where she’ll come face to face with Dark Prince Ralsei.

Hollow Knight (2017)

A 2-D Metroidvania, players control the spectral Knight, a warrior with no name. They’ll explore the plagued kingdom of Hallownest and fight difficult insectoid enemies along the way. Known for its difficulty, those who enjoyed Undertale will like its atmospheric world, comparable in depth to the quirky one found in Undertale.

Celeste (2018)

A 2D platformer, Celeste sees audiences play as Madeline as she attempts to climb Celeste Mountain. Offering an emotional and impactful story about mental health, anyone who enjoyed Undertale’s narrative will enjoy playing this game.

Psychonauts 2 (2022)

Set in an alternate world where humans are granted psychic powers thanks to the extra-terrestrial element Psitanium, this 3D platformer will have players beating enemies with their brains. Raz returns as the main character from the first game and is on a quest to become a Psychonaut. This game is most like Undertale with its strong narrative focus, quirky dialogue, and combat that can be solved in more than one way.

The Last Guardian (2022)

In a strange land, a boy meets an even more mysterious creature, and over the course of the game, they forge a bond together. This action-adventure game will have players falling in love with the enormous Trico. While the gameplay is different from Undertale, both games have heavy emotional themes that run through them, like friendship, morality, and loyalty.
