Following the success of The Night Agent, The Diplomat is Netlix’s latest 2023 political thriller to drop on the platform. The series was created by Debora Cahn, who also served as producer for the highly acclaimed political dramas The West Wing and Homeland.
A-lister Keri Russell takes on the leading role in her first show since playing a spy in the critically acclaimed The Americans. And Rufus Sewell, in his second Netflix original appearance for him this year after Kaleidoscope, plays her duplicitous husband, Hal.
British socialite Cecilia Dennison is among the supporting characters who make their mark on the high-stakes political show. But who took on the part of the charming seductress? And where have you seen her before?
What is The Diplomat on Netflix about?
Netflix’s political thriller, The Diplomat, follows Kerri Russel’s character, Kate, after being appointed the new U.S. Ambassador in the United Kingdom. Her husband, Hal (played by Rufus Sewell), is a decommissioned political legend who won’t stop interfering with Kate’s job. Throughout the series, she must manage an international incident and her increasingly tense marriage.
At the start of the series, Kate is a seasoned diplomat who specializes in handling sensitive war issues. In the first episode, she’s preparing to go on assignment to Afghanistan but is sent to London instead after a mysterious attack on a British Navy ship.
In London, Kate must earn the respect and build a relationship with the quarrelsome U.K. prime minister, played by Rory Kinnear, and a whole heap of British and foreign politicians more inclined to listen to her husband. For his part, Hal is the type of husband more than happy to jeopardize Kate’s career for the sake of achieving his Machiavellian political goals.
One person Kate gets close to professionally and maybe personally is foreign secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi), while his sister, Cecilia, plays a crucial part in disrupting the protagonist’s marriage.
Who plays Cecilia Dennison in Netflix’s The Diplomat?
T’Nia Miller plays the part of Austin Dennison’s socialite sister, Cecilia. While not directly involved in the political games, the main characters in the series play, Cecilia, does forge a connection with Hal. This is quite fitting throughout the series. There’s a lot of chemistry happening between Kate and Cecilia’s brother.
Strangely enough, Hal’s relationship with Cecilia brings him closer to his wife, which isn’t how affairs usually work.

I loved watching T’Nia Miller. Dhr absolutely made the character real. I’m looking forward to seeing more of her character. Especially if Hall is injured in the car explosion. He will need her sassiness to help him back on his feet. Js.
