Summary

A really enjoyable episode with a feel-good ending.

We recap the Netflix K-Drama series Doctor Cha Season 1 Episode 5, which contains spoilers.

The fun element of Doctor Cha is undoubtedly the show’s biggest selling point at this stage. That, and Uhm Jung-hwa, is perfect for the role of Jeong-suk. You can’t help but root for her, and today’s ending should bring a smile to viewers’ faces.

Doctor Cha Season 1 Episode 5 Recap

After Jeong-suk’s collapse, there is widespread consequences. For the resident herself she’s led to believe her husband heroically carried her across the hospital in a noble act of care. In-ho, conversely, is disappointed he let his emotions overcome him, while Seung-hi is incredibly jealous.

Additionally, So-ra alleges Jung-min is “too friendly” with Jeong-suk but is happy to label his acts as being out of “pity.”

What happens with Chairman Oh Chang-gyu’s surgery?

In having an out-of-body experience during his resuscitation, Oh Chang-gyu tells Jeong-suk he’ll accept the surgery offered to him, valuing his life over the self-consciousness caused by a colonoscopy bag. Elsewhere, the incarcerated Hae-nam is still insisting on being allowed to pass away.

At home, Jeong-suk is told by I-rang, who is trying to prepare for art school admission, that she wishes to go her own way now due to her mother’s nonchalance in what she’s doing.

Then, In-ho gifts his wife the bracelet he promised her before trying to coax her into delaying her residency for the sake of their daughter’s academic ambitions.

As Jeong-suk buys presents for everyone following her first payday, Chairman Oh’s surgery goes successfully. It’s that fortunate, Chang-gyu even gets to “preserve his a**s” and will now only need a temporary stoma during his chemotherapy treatment. However, there is still a tinge of regret in the chairman’s tone because he believes his children aren’t bothered about his condition.

Who is Eun-seo’s father?

While a frustrated Seung-hi has to be calmed down about the fact Jeong-suk has the same bracelet as her, a shocking revelation comes. Eun-seo is the daughter of In-ho, though she finds herself enraged over having never properly known her father due to his marriage.

Still, it’s clear Seung-hi still holds out hopes she can get her adulterous partner for herself and that she isn’t the guilty party here.

After being set all manner of menial tasks by an obviously bitter Seung-hi, Jeong-suk finds herself in an appointment with Roy Kim. Here, the middle-aged resident is instructed to prioritize her health and regularly take her prescribed immunosuppressants.

Why does Jeong-suk end up wanting to quit?

The next day, Jeong-suk runs into trouble. Firstly, when rumors start to spread regarding her relationship with In-ho. More importantly, however, Hae-nam breaks free of her loosened handcuffs to roam around in search of her daughter.

Ultimately, this means Jeong-suk, who is responsible for the elder, is left in serious trouble (even if Seung-hi had distracted her from the incident occurring in the first place).

Despite Hae-nam being found, Jeong-suk is still encouraged to quit her residency, given the chief views her mistake as “incompetence.” So the deflated middle-aged trainee chooses to confide in Roy Kim about her woes, only to hear it’s best she does resign if she will approach work with a negative, confidence-lacking attitude.

Following a surprisingly supportive heart-to-heart with the discharged Chairman Oh, who tries to convince Jeong-suk to focus on improvements as opposed to worries, the resident visits In-ho. In this scene, the professor is told his wife indeed plans on delaying her residency, causing him joy; he cannot wait to share with the smug Seung-hi.

Doctor Cha Season 1 Episode 5 Ending Explained

With the backing of her understanding mother, Jeong-suk prepares to officially stop her residency. However, things change when she is ushered into a conference with Chairman Oh, who credits the middle-aged trainee with his “changed life,” one which has led to a ten billion won donation to Gusan University Hospital.

In expressing his immense gratitude to Jeong-suk, Chairman Oh lets it be known that she cannot quit the hospital, or else he’ll rescind his donation. “I am going to continuously storm in here and check until Dr. Cha Jeong-suk becomes a specialist,” he says, leaving everyone either happy or shocked (with In-ho and Seung-hi, in particular, falling into the latter category).

Finally, when confirming she won’t quit to Roy Kim, the episode ends with Jeong-suk seemingly having a new lease on life.
