7. Shahmaran (2023)

In this Netflix original series from Turkey, the central plot revolves around a community that worships a half-woman, half-snake mythical creature. 

Official Premise: When Sahsu goes to Adana, she seizes on the chance to confront her estranged grandfather, but she soon finds herself in the midst of a legend.

6. Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight (2022 – )

Despite featuring voice stars like Jack Black, Rita Ora, and James Hong, the newest addition to the Kung Fu Panda franchise hasn’t been particularly well-received. Viewers expressed disappointment at the mediocre and rather dull storylines, which didn’t match the excellent movie trilogy. 

Official Premise: Legendary warrior Po teams up with an elite knight on a quest to rescue magical weapons, restore his reputation and save the world.

5. Invisible City (2021 – )

Invisible City effectively mixes mythological creatures with modern-day police procedural drama. The Brazilian series premiered its second season in March 2023 and impressed global Netflix subscribers. 

Official Premise: An underground world is inhabited by mythical creatures evolved from a deep lineage of Brazilian folklore. One detective finds himself caught in a murder investigation that puts him in the middle of a battle between these two worlds.

4. Record of Ragnarok (2021 – )

Based on the popular Manga Shuumatsu no Walküre of the same name, this dark anime is full of action-packed sequences and mythical lore. 

Official Premise: Before eradicating humankind from the world, the gods give them one last chance to prove themselves worthy of survival; let the Ragnarok battles begin.

3. Daniel Spellbound (2022 – )

The second season of the Canadian fantasy animation came out in February 2023. It’s a fun, family-friendly series centered on a young boy tasked with saving the magical world from evil. 

Official Premise: Magic is real but hidden from the public. Daniel knows where to find it. He discovers a strange ingredient and gets the attention of dangerous alchemists, which takes him on an adventure while the magical world hangs in the balance.

2. Lockwood & Co. (2023 – )

This supernatural detective show is based on a book series by Jonathan Stroud. The show is set in an alternate timeline where ghosts are malevolent, and only children can see and stop them from forcing the living to join their ranks. After its release in January, the series stayed in Netflix’s global Top 10 for more than three weeks. 

Official Premise: A tiny startup, run by two teenage boys and a newly arrived, supremely psychically gifted girl, a renegade trio destined to unravel a mystery that will change the course of history.

Cast: Ruby Stokes, Cameron Chapman, Ali Hadji-Heshmati, Ivanno Jeremiah, Luke Treadaway

1. Shadow and Bone (2021 – )

Based on a beloved series of YA novels by Leigh Bardugo, Shadow and Bone is quickly becoming one of the most popular original series on Netflix. After a two-year wait, the second season of the epic series premiered in March 2023 to acclaim from fans and critics alike. 

Official Premise: Dark forces conspire against orphan mapmaker Alina Starkov when she unleashes an extraordinary power that could change the fate of her war-torn world.

      We probably would have included it, but it just missed the 2023 list! It came out in late 2022.
