Summary

The flashback scenes seem to parody the spy genre somewhat, with a cocky, cliched Mason Kane and some rather mediocre video game-style action sequences. But the rest of the episode fares much better, with some tense drama and a shockingly meteoric twist ending.

We recap the 2023 Amazon Prime Video series Citadel Season 1 Episode 3, which contains spoilers.

Citadel’s secret agents Mason Kane (Richard Madden) and Nadia Sinh (Priyanka Chopra Jonas) are finally back together after eight years apart.

In the last episode, Mason helped Nadia reclaim her memories, although Mason’s memories were lost forever. In the third installment, the duo hunts for other Citadel agents. While poor Bernard (Stanley Tucci) is tortured by Dahlia (Lesley Manville) for his secrets.

Citadel Season 1 Episode 2 Recap

Starting in Caceres, Spain, Nadia drives Mason to a Citadel safe house. She extracts a bullet from Mason’s shoulder, and the two catch up on those many years apart. Nadia notices that Mason is wearing a wedding ring. He talks about his wife Abby and daughter Hendrix.

Mason is eager to know more about his own past and his relationship with Nadia. She hesitates to dig deeper but admits they were briefly an item. Then viewers are treated to a flashback sequence illustrating how these two first met.

It’s ten years earlier in Utah. At the Citadel’s secret headquarters, Mason is given his latest assignment. He must retrieve a man-made virus before it is released into society. The agent infiltrates a base in Iran and escapes, skiing down the Alborz Mountains.

How do Mason and Nadia first meet?

At the foot of the mountain range, Mason is surrounded by enemy soldiers. One of these is Nadia, working deep undercover. Together they escape via a helicopter. Back at base, Mason refuses to thank Nadia for saving his life. They’ve only been properly introduced, but there is already some strong chemistry between the two agents, who flirt with one another. Two weeks later, in Paris, they are getting even more familiar with each other.

In the present, Nadia sends a message to an unknown ally, and Bernard is tortured by Dahlia’s people. Dahlia has Citadel’s AI system, but they have been thwarted by a 19-digit password.

Bernard refuses to give up this password, which would allow them access to the locations of all the nuclear weapons worldwide.

Bernard is then tortured, with some of his teeth being removed from his mouth. Dahlia mentions torturing Carter Spence, another Citadel agent. Then Anders Silje enters the room, excited to drill into Bernard’s brain.

Bernard tries to reason with Anders, offering him information on the woman he loved in return for his freedom.

At the safe house, Mason speaks with Abby again. Updating her on his rendezvous with Nadia. After this call, Nadia urges Mason to return to his family. Yet Mason needs to press on so his family will eventually be safe from Manticore. He asks Nadia to train him.

Where is Carter Spence?

Nadia checks the case for the whereabouts of any other agents and finds messages from Carter Spence. He was pursued by Manticore after the fall of Citadel. His last location was Fez, Morocco. Nadia worries that Carter is being tortured there and asks Mason to help her infiltrate the base for further intel.

In Morocco, Mason meets with a Portuguese crime boss called Balduino. Using a nifty gadget, more specifically Mason’s lighter, Nadia downloads data from Balduino’s phone. Their plan works, but Balduino gets inside Mason’s head, figuratively speaking. He believes that Nadia was the mole who helped Manticore bring down the Citadel in the first place. Mason questions Nadia afterward. She denies the claims.

Citadel Season 1 Episode 2 Ending Explained

Who is Anders’ ex-lover?

The episode concludes with Bernard asking for his phone to prove to Anders that the villain’s ex-lover is still alive. Anders supplies the phone, and Bernard shows him a photograph of Mason with his family. It would appear that Anders’ ex is Abby Conroy, Mason’s current wife. Anders thought she was dead, but she was still alive.

Abby was another agent who had their memories wiped. She told Jo that she met Mason at a center for people recovering from memory loss, which explains the whole predicament.

Bernard tells Anders that he can take him to Abby if he frees him first, then he will tell Anders everything.
