This article discusses the possibility of Sanctuary Season 2 on Netflix and the show’s renewed or canceled status. It may contain spoilers for the first season.
Sanctuary is a sumo wrestling drama on Netflix revolving around Kiyoshi Oze, also known as Enno, a cocky and sneaky wrestler who takes his brash attitude and unconventional tactics into a sport steeped in unaccommodating tradition.
Across eight episodes, Enno rises through the ranks, annoys almost everyone, is brutalized by corruption and other wrestlers, and has to come face to face with not just his rivals but also himself.
Here’s a quote from our review:
It’s everything else that’s the problem. There is, ironically, I suppose, too much of everything except the good bits – too much padding, too many deviations, aimless subplots, wild tonal shifts, and mismatched ideas. It coalesces into something more coherent eventually but feels too little too late and bows out on an unsatisfactory cliffhanger conclusion.
Sanctuary has accumulated something of an audience since its debut, so its potential future is definitely a matter of some concern. Here’s everything we know.
Will there be a Sanctuary Season 2 on Netflix?
Renewed or canceled status: TBC
At the time of writing Netflix has not renewed Sanctuary for a second season.
As is very typical with Netflix originals, the Sanctuary ending is totally open-ended and there is clearly much more of the story to tell. There is absolutely some artistic justification for continuing it, and the back half of the season is definitely stronger than the first.
But this somewhat cynical tactic isn’t good enough on its own. Netflix will be paying close attention to various important metrics such as the number of viewers, how many of them watch the show to completion, the critical reception, and how the show is received among fans on social media platforms.
Truthfully there are probably many more backroom considerations to consider as well with international deals and the like.
However, I’m hopeful for a renewal here. I certainly didn’t love Sanctuary, but I also felt like it was coming together in the end, and I suspect many fans will have experienced the same trajectory. With the ending leaving a lot on the table, there’s a good chance that there will be enough interest to justify a second outing.
With that in mind, our official prediction is that Sanctuary will be renewed for a second season. We’ll update this page whenever we know more.

I watched all of Sanctuary episodes and I LOVED IT. I hope Netflix will bring it back for its second season.
This show is one of the best shows Netflix has produced. It’s hard to get me emotionally involved into a show but the last episode had me balling my eyes out. It would be terrible if Netflix doesn’t produce a 2nd season to this show. Hats off to the writers, to the actors, and to the directors. This showed the inside of Sumo and the brotherhood that’s created. Remainder me of football and wrestling in one.
Second season of sanctuary is a must!
I enjoyed every moment of sanctuary and it taught me about sumo wrestling. I want more.
It’s very simple…season 2 of Sanctuary or NO more Netflix for me. It is definitely a 1 of a kind show.
Sanctuary was amazing!
I like it ver much there better be a season 2 of sanctuary
I enjoyed each an every episode of it.
Loved every episode. Need a second season!!!!
Brilliant .. amazing acting and super insight into the wold of sumo ! It’s a must for there to be a second 2nd season.
I totally disagree to this writer.
All the “patting “s are very necessary for understanding the world of sumo, each character’s behind story and connecting to season 2.
And I was wishing and knowing the end of this season would be this way. Because I didn’t wanna see it yet and care which one was winning. Just like the ends of Lone wolf or Tomorrow’s Joe.
I fell in love with Sumo wrestling on NHK tv and was THRILLED they made this movie. It is excellent and brought me deep into a world I wanted to know more about. I like the modern twist with the rebellious wrestler and feminist sports writer who all come around to appreciate and respect traditions. I think Sumo is on its way to our shores.
I need a second season! watching the main characters change and have respect for sumo was eye opening! I cried so hard when they cut his topknot. So much emotional growth and raw fighting. I will rewatch a second time. I love you Enno!!
I loved this show! Speaking from a Caribbean standpoint it was interesting to learn about rhe Japanese culture of Sumo wrestling. Enno connected with his viewers and I rode the emotional roller-coaster of his development. Now I want to visit Japan for the Cherry Blossoms and to take in a Sumo match!
Seriously love this new show.
Please let there be a season 2 sanctuary was a killer series
I need more Enno. He’s so hot!
Sanctuary was amazing. Saw a couple live matches years ago when I lived in Japan with then Yokozuna class sumo wrestler Asashoryu.. it was Epic. Season 2 is a must! Can’t leave us hanging like that!:)
Was a pretty great first season, it slowly built over the length of the season — and big ups to shinzuchi !!
Season 2 and more please !!!!
Agree that the 2nd half season was better than the first. It deserves another season.
Need badly that season 2
Watched the whole thing and season 2 is a must! It was a little off early but it all came together.
Sanctuary is amazing, I want more. I loved the characters, the brotherhood coming together and the insight into the sumo dojo.
Please let there be a season 2 otherwise I’m going to have to move to Japan.
Don’t agree with the review…I thought the 1st half set up the story and then showed how Enno went through a “Rocky-esque” transformation to overcome adversity. This really needs a 2nd series. However, if there is any danger of it not getting a 3rd they should get it wrapped up in series 2
Just finished watching season one… Its definitely worth the watch and I really hope there will be a second season.
I absolutely LOVED SANCTUARY. Since I love Sumo Wrestling & Japanese Culture. Please ?? make season 2 HAPPEN.
SEASON 2 IS A MUST!! Sanctuary is surprisingly Amazing!!
I truly loved the first season, binged it twice actually. Beautiful sun plots and really did get me emotional when I usually am not. Maybe I too fell in love with the traditions of sumo.
Definitely one of the best show I have watched on Netflix. The character development on the show was amazing, especially the last 2 episodes will make the audience glued to the storyline wanting to know what will happen to Enno, Shizuuchi, and Ryuku. Netflix scored a home run on this. Would be stupid if they don’t renew season 2. This show will keep many subscribers wanting more and keep their subscription.
Superbe serie merci netflix et oui nous espérons une 2ie saison ..j ai tout regardé en 2 jours et j en redemande.
I loved it! give us more!
Cant wait forbthe Season 2. I love the plot and the series will grow on you specially on tje last 4 episodes. I love it.
who is the moron being so critical of this this show? Enno went from half hearted ahole to passionate leader. he found a new sense of purpose it was amazing to see the character develop and the last episode was so dramatic. This needs season 2 and more.
I love the show. Little bit of Asashoryu in him.
Love this show. Watched Sumo while living in Japan, was delighted to see Sumo wrestlers walking in my neighbourhood during one of the competitions. This show brought it all back to me. Great series
I loved every bit of it. The Sumo culture, the characters, and the relationships were spectacular. Please renew and gives us more!
Absolutely would LOVE to see a second season. The storyline was great, gives you a great insight of the world of Sumo Wrestlers. Plus the look at the young femail reporters perception & growth of respecting the Sumo Wrestlers.
This show was incredible!!
Definitely would watch this series again. Put season 2 in play
Wont disappoint at all!
Great Season One. I am now a fan of Wataru Ichinose.
Brought to light such an unappreciated sport, Bravo!
I don’t believe you put a show on Netflix and have a ending like that and now not sure if
there will be a second season…what a disappointment NETFLIX!!! You had many shows
that did not make any sense and still had next season going on…SOOOOOOO DISAPPOINTED
WITH NETFLIX!!!! BOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
The most savage cliff hanging. OMG please NETFLIX Re-New it or Im Getting HBO instead.. Dammnnn must watch!
I really enjoyed this show and I am highly hopeful for a renewal. I started learning about sumo after watching this show. Great production and story.
I am excited that there may be a second series. Yes, Lu like the plot and characters were at times odds with each other, it seems to be a metaphor for the series it self, and by the end the series came together leaving a place to explore more
Loved It. Please bring it back for a 2nd season!
Best show on TV bar none!! There has to be a second season!! Netflix, if you’re reading this, this is the best show you got! If it’s not getting the rating it just needs more marketing or something. Netflix, Netflix, Netflix, go Netflix!
What a great series it has everything. Definitely need a series 2.
Season 2 please!!
From western narrative perspectives there were some social and cultural nuances that I didn’t quite catch, and the sub-plots are a little disjointed at first but it all ties in together beautifully for an incredibly moving and captivating series. I knew nothing about Sumo, and am still ignorant of it outside the dramatized version portrayed in the show. That being said, I am engulfed with the desire to learn and see more. This show hits in an unexpected way that I want to see continue in storytelling. Deep and believable it was an unassuming and thrilling watch. I laughed, cried, cheered, and wailed; only touching the surface of the emotional range portreyed by the talented cast. They would be doing a disservice to us all in failing to push through and move forward with another season.
Best series i have watched since “Breaking Bad”
Loved Sanctuary! More more more! No idea what this author is talking about.
