This article previews White House Plumbers Episode 3 and may contain spoilers for previous episodes.

The Watergate scandal hasn’t exactly been underexplored in film and TV. All the President’s Men unpacked how reporters at The Washington Post exposed the details way back in 1976. Even recently, Gaslit on Starz explored the scandal from the perspective of Martha Mitchell.

But you probably haven’t seen the version of Watergate depicted in White House Plumbers — unless you saw Veep, I suppose. This satirical and exaggerated take on the story treats the whole thing like the farce it was, turning E. Howard Hunt and G. Gordon Liddy into caricatures and relying on the timeless joke that Washington political operators are all complete idiots.

Here’s what happened in White House Plumbers Episode 2:

  • We were introduced to Project Gemstone, an umbrella term for a bunch of operations devised by Liddy and Hunt that include paying prostitutes to seduce Democrats and assassinating far-left agitators. Dean Mitchell thinks they’re both nuts.
  • A memo typed up by Dita Beard, an International Telephone and Telegraph lobbyist, leaked to the press. The memo detailed a payout from ITT for $400,000 dollars’ worth of hotel rooms for the RNC in exchange for a favorable ruling in an antitrust lawsuit.
  • With a Senate Judiciary Committee investigation underway, Liddy and Hunt persuade Dita to feign a medical emergency to delay her testimony. Later, they were able to talk her into claiming the memo was a forgery.
  • After their success with Dita, Liddy and Hunt were given $250,000 of funding to carry out Project Opal, aka the bugging of the DNC headquarters in the Watergate Hotel.
