The latest star-studded drama from David E. Kelley, Love & Death is the latest take on the much-adapted true story of Candy Montgomery, a Texan housewife who began an affair with a fellow member of her Methodist church congregation and hacked his wife, Betty Gore, to pieces with a wood-splitting axe.
As ever with HBO Max, the miniseries dropped three episodes on its premiere date of April 27, 2023, and will proceed weekly henceforth.
Here’s everything that happened in Love & Death Episode 5:
- After confessing about the affair, Allan was read his rights, but the police immediately began to focus on Candy.
- Knowing that the police considered her a suspect, Candy retained Don Crowder as her attorney and confessed to him that she did indeed kill Betty Gore.
- Don began to leverage Collin County’s piety in Candy’s defense, as well as advising her to adopt a more conservative image and visit a psychiatrist.
- Don also campaigned to have Candy tried outside of Collin County, which was ultimately rejected by the judge.
- At the psychiatrist’s office Candy was hypnotized and force to relive the events in Betty’s utility room. The psychiatrist concludes she simply snapped.
- At the end of the episode, Don told Pat the truth.

Predictions for Love & Death Season 1 Episode 6:
- Candy’s defense will begin in earnest. Don will leverage everything he can to play up the idea of an everyday housewife tragically driven to temporary madness.
- I also think Don’t defense of Candy will very much help his own image, and that he’ll play on that as we go.
- Candy’s defense will be paralleled by the ruination of her reputation, and probably the breakdown of her home life.
