Will there be a Season 4 of the Hulu series The Great – renewed or cancelled status

We discuss whether there will be a Season 4 of the Hulu series The Great and its renewed or canceled status.

The Great is a purposely inaccurate historical and satirical take on the Russian monarchy, created by Tony McNamara (The Favourite). This Hulu original series focuses on the lives of Peter III (Nicholas Hoult), the former Emperor of Russia, and Catherine the Great (Elle Fanning), the current Empress. With their outlandish romantic relationship taking centre stage.

In season three, Catherine and Peter seek marriage counseling after Catherine’s attempts to kill her husband in the previous season’s finale. She actually stabbed Peter’s lookalike Pugachev, who was a stand-in for these sorts of predicaments.

Peter isn’t innocent in the matter, though. He slept with and then accidentally killed Catherine’s mother.

Adjacent to this tumultuous marriage, Catherine must tackle a growing uprising among the peasant population and plenty of backstabbing and betrayal from her own allies. As always, Archie (Adam Godley) and Elizabeth (Belinda Bromilow) are on hand to advise Catherine through these tricky altercations.

There’s also the return of the awkward love triangle between Grigor (Gwilym Lee), Marial (Phoebe Fox) and Georgina (Charity Wakefield). The Swedish royals Hugo (Freddie Fox) and Agnes (Grace Molony) aren’t far behind either, planning their own devious scheme. And, of course, the cast is rounded out by General Velementov (Douglas Hodge), Dr Vinodel (Julian Barratt) and Marial’s 11-year-old husband Maxim (Henry Meredith).

Hulu’s original has been a soaring success for the streaming platform, but will it be returning for a fourth season?

We fully expect to hear news by July.

Hulu is yet to announce the fate of The Great and whether it will be renewed for a fourth outing, but it feels like the renewal will be confirmed any day now. Alongside The Handmaid’s Tale, The Great is one of the streamer’s most successful, high-profile, long-running series. It has a solid fan base and is adored by critics; it would be safe to assume that the series will be renewed, right?

The series has been well-received by critics over all three seasons. Rotten Tomatoes gave season one an 89% score, season two a blistering 100% score, and season three currently holds a score of 100%, too, albeit from a smaller portion of reviews. Over on IMDB, the stats are similarly impressive, with a current 8.2 rating.

The show has also fared well with TV awards and nominations, mainly for its excellent writing and acting. It would seem likely that season three will end with some Emmy nods once again.

With all that information at hand, it seems almost certain that the show will be renewed. Although the TV landscape is at a rather strange juncture at the moment, what with strikes and yoyoing streaming figures, it wouldn’t be completely surprising if the show was to be cancelled. Hopefully, Hulu comes to its senses and renews the show, though.

As always, we will keep you posted on any updates on the pending renewal of The Great.
