The Watergate scandal hasn’t exactly been underexplored in film and TV. All the President’s Men unpacked how reporters at The Washington Post exposed the details way back in 1976. Even recently, Gaslit on Starz explored the scandal from the perspective of Martha Mitchell.
But you probably haven’t seen the version of Watergate depicted in White House Plumbers — unless you saw Veep, I suppose. This satirical and exaggerated take on the story treats the whole thing like the farce it was, turning E. Howard Hunt and G. Gordon Liddy into caricatures and relying on the timeless joke that Washington political operators are all complete idiots.
Here’s what happened in White House Plumbers Episode 4:
- With the Watergate break-in exposed, Howard Hunt and Gordon Liddy are both responding very differently. Liddy is faintly proud of himself while Howard is panicked beyond belief.
- In that panic, Howard compels St. John to help him dispose of evidence.
- When Dorothy returns from Paris she pushes Howard to retain the services of a defense attorney.
- Dorothy arranges hush money payments from the government to be distributed among her family, the Liddys and the Cubans.
- Nixon wins the election in a landslide, meaning the whole thing was pointless anyway.
- When Dorothy finds out Howard involved St. John in the cover-up she resolves to leave him. She boards United Flight 553 to meet with a journalist, but the plane crashes, killing everyone aboard.
