The FX-produced Hulu series Class of ’09 is the latest in what is sure to be a long line of film and TV shows rooted in our present anxieties about AI.
Starring Brian Tyree Henry and Kate Mara, the story plays out across three timelines, each informed by the other, teasing at the wider conspiracy that led to the development of a self-aware crime-fighting AI system that has made our near-future look like an Orwellian technological dystopia.
Here’s what happened in Class of ’09 Season 1 Episode 4:
- In the past, we see how Drew was shot in an agent-on-agent shooting.
- During firearms training, Tayo hesitates before shooting a target that depicts a Black man, while Poet hesitates and then decides not to shoot a female target, inventing a biography for it instead. This is, obviously, thematically quite important.
- Hour vocalizes the idea for Better Life for what seems like the first time when she questions the purpose of her polygraph test.
- Speaking of which, Poet amends her answers when she resits the polygraph to reveal her relationship with Lennix.
- In the present day, Tayo continues to interrogate Tupirik with the help of Better Life. The system suggests he might have infiltrated the FBI.
- To confirm this, a double-agent on the shooting range at Quantico opens fire on the other recruits and instructors, including Drew, who shoots him dead before seemingly dying.
- The J. Edgar Hoover building is destroyed by Tupirik’s agents who sabotaged the foundations while posing as construction workers.

How many episodes will Class of ’09 Season 1 have?
Class of ’09 will have eight episodes. It premiered the first two episodes on May 10, and the rest will air weekly through all of May and most of June. Here’s the full episode schedule:
