Do you like thrillers? How about fantasy/supernatural dramas? What about thrillers AND fantasy/supernatural together? Thrillers and fantasy/supernatural dramas dominate the upcoming June lineup. However, rom-com fans, you are not left out because there’s plenty to choose from.
June offers up a gift in the form of a straight-forward old-school romcom starring two beloved K-pop idols/actors, along with two other smaller youth romance dramas.
If you like action, you will have many options. First up is Bloodhounds, an action noir drama where the anxiety around money struggles leads two boxers to use their skills as employees for an underground private lender.
Lies Hidden in My Garden is a suspenseful thriller about a family that is anything but what they seem. And while you might not expect an accounting drama to be anything more than quiet number crunching in a sea of cubicles, Numbers serves up an action thriller about a genius accountant with only a high school diploma who gets mixed up in the injustice connected to one of Korea’s top accounting firms.
In the fantasy/supernatural category, the first offering is See You in My 19th Life, a reincarnation rom-com in which a woman searches for the love of her life whom she remembers from her 18th life, hoping it does not meet the same tragic fate.
Mrs. Durian involves two women from a noble Joseon-era family who time-travel to modern-day Korea.
And, at the end of the month, a second fantasy romcom, Heartbeat, features Ok Taec Yeon from the K-pop group 2PM in the lead as a vampire who shares a house with a cold-hearted woman.
If you seek kdramas with both action and fantasy/supernatural elements, then Revenant is a great option. Kim Tae Ri, last seen as the lead Na Hee Do in Twenty-One Twenty-Five, stars as a demon-possessed low-level employee who works to solve the mysterious deaths around her.
But if you’re looking for a change-up from the heavier fare, perhaps the romantic comedy King the Land will work. Starring K-pop stars Lee Jun Ho and Im Yoon Ah in an opposites-attract setup, King the Land marks Lee Jun Ho’s first leading role since winning the Baeksang for his work in “The Red Sleeve.” (Lee Jun Ho is the first idol-turned-actor to win the Best Actor award at the prestigious Baeksang Arts Awards, winning alongside Kim Tae Ri as Best Actress for Twenty-One Twenty-Five. He is also a member of the group 2PM alongside Ok Taec Yeon; see Heartbeat above.)
This month’s options for straightforward romantic dramas include Sound Candy and The Villain of Romance.
