There is a cynical edge to The Ultimatum premise.
You take a collection of couples with one partner ready for marriage. Then you split them up, allowing them to enter into a sort of fake marriage with one of the other people from the assembled cast so they can experience life with someone else. Then they put them back together with their original partner and see what happens.
Perhaps I am missing the point, but the whole show seems designed to cause as much friction as possible with the couples, and it certainly delivers on that front.
In the spin-off series The Ultimatum: Queer Love, we have our selected couples entering the arena and going through the somewhat controversial process that will decide whether they stay together or not.
Perhaps some of the participants find the whole process in some way cathartic or helpful, but it seems that an atmosphere of jealousy, back-stabbing, duplicity, and gameplaying is prevalent in the show, and that could be the reason it is so popular.
