Summary

Saint X tries to end with a compassionate story, but it just falls short of achieving this. There are far too many chaotic scenes and rushed edits to make this a cohesive ending. And again, characters make outlandish decisions that cannot be taken seriously. But there are commendable attempts at an emotive finale nonetheless.

We recap the Hulu series Saint X Season 1 Episode 8, “Faraway,” which contains spoilers and explains the Ending.

Hulu’s murder mystery series Saint X concludes with “Faraway.” In the season finale, all of the show’s many timelines end. In the flashbacks, Alison’s (West Duchovny) death is fully explained, exploring all the suspects involved in the case. While the present timeline focuses on Emily (Alycia Debnam-Carey) and her search for answers.

Saint X Season 1 Episode 8 Recap

Starting with the flashback sequences, we find Edwin, Gogo, and Alison at the local bar. Edwin tries to explain to Gogo why he forbade Sara from dating him. Edwin states that he was only protecting his friend. Sara doesn’t love him.

Alison flirts with Gogo and asks Edwin to take them somewhere that tourists don’t go. Edwin drives them to a secluded spot. The hotel workers show Alison a good time, smoking weed and drinking alcohol together by the sea.

At this scenic spot, Alison initiates her threesome plan, kissing Gogo and Edwin, then coercing the two into kissing each other. Edwin clearly has feelings for Gogo and kisses his friend. Alison then passes out drunk.

The kiss unlocks something in Gogo. He realizes that he loves Edwin too. They are about to take things further when Alison wakes and catches them together.

Edwin panics and shouts at Alison, telling her to leave. She runs back to the hotel.

How did Gogo know who Emily really was?

In the present timeline, Gogo drives Emily to a car park. He knows she’s been lying to him, and he calls her by her real name, Claire. Gogo states that her tics gave her away. Emily worries that he’s going to kill her. Gogo drags her out of the cab. He says he’ll tell her the truth, but he never wants to see her again.

Gogo explains what happened that night, all about the scenic spot and the kissing, adding that he wanted to chase after Alison, but Edwin stopped him. Gogo blames himself for not stopping her.

Back at the hotel, Alison sleeps with Tyler. She forces him to strangle her, although Tyler refuses. Alison returns to her room in a drunken haze and argues with Claire. Alison’s realizes that she isn’t special and has a mental breakdown.

How is Alison killed?

Alison decides to swim to Faraway Cay on her own to prove to herself that she is special. She also needs a memorable story to take back home with her. Alison makes it to the island but slips and falls on the rocks. Alison isn’t murdered. She dies by accident from this collision.

Emily believes Gogo’s story; they did not murder her sister. She then visits Tyler, still desperate for the truth. She thinks it must have been Tyler that slept with Alison that night.

He eventually admits to the truth. Tyler didn’t want to be a suspect in her murder case, so he lied to the police. Tyler tells Emily that she was the last person to see Alison alive. He heard them arguing.

After these hard truths, Emily returns to her apartment. She blames herself, surmising that she could have stopped Alison from going to Faraway Cay.

Further flashbacks fill in all the remaining gaps in the narrative. Gogo and Edwin were caught drunk driving and were arrested. They were released the following day. Alison went missing. Tyler blamed Gogo and Edwin. Gogo panicked and ran.

Why did Gogo think he deserved to be punished?

Edwin was planning on surprising Gogo with a trip to New York. His sister informed him of the missing girl and the rumors. Because of this, Edwin had to cancel his trip. Gogo believed that his relationship with Edwin caused this misfortune. He thinks they deserve to be punished for what they have done. It was an act from God. Then Alison’s body was found, and Gogo was arrested for drug possession.

Saint X Season 1 Ending Explained

Three months after Emily’s breakdown, we see her moving back home with her parents. She is unable to open up to them but speaks more freely with her mother in private. They discuss their grief and their past regrets. Emily accepts that she will never know exactly what happened to Alison and that she needs to move on. She asks her mom to call her Claire again.

In the final scene, Gogo travels back home, too, back to the island. He meets Edwin, who is dying. Edwin asks Gogo to tell him all about New York, the place he always dreamed of visiting but never did. Edwin and Gogo bond again, rekindling their old friendship. Gogo kisses Edwin on the forehead, and they hold hands as the camera pulls away.
