Mount & Blade is a 2008 strategy role-playing game (RPG) developed by TaleWorlds Entertainment and published by Paradox Interactive. Set in the fictional land of Calradia, players engage in free-form sandbox gameplay and create their own character to do battle, trade with allies and manage their own kingdom in this medieval world.

This game has gone on to create a franchise with spin-offs and sequels, including the latest titled Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord in 2022. Games inspired by the medieval period and history, in general, are very common in gaming, spanning all the different eras of time across different genres.

Total War franchise (2000-2022)

Total War is a series of real-time strategy games set in a number of historical and fantastical settings and adds turn-based strategy and resource management to the mix. The game has a heavy emphasis on flanking manoeuvres and formations, rather than just beating opponents with brute force.

Anno franchise (1998-2019)

Anno is another franchise in the real-time strategy genre, with players establishing several colonies on many different islands, and managing their economy. Players will explore the area, engage with diplomacy, and trade with other civilizations, though they are free to combat those kingdoms on both land and sea if they wish.

Age of Empires IV (2021)

Age of Empires IV is a real-time strategy game, where players must defeat their enemy while balancing their economy. Set during the early Middle Ages to the early Renaissance, players can choose from one of four campaigns, like the Norman conquest of England, the Hundred Years War, one centered on the Mongol Empire, and another on the rise of Moscow.

Men of War: Assault Squad (2011)

A real-time strategy game set during World War Two, Men of War: Assault Squad tests players with infantry and tank-based combat, with players having to make sure they have enough ammunition, and inventory space, that players have a line of sight and that their shells can penetrate an enemy tank.

Players can also play this game with their friends in the Skirmish mode.

Totally Accurate Battle Simulator (2019)

A satirical take on the more historically inclined and serious battle simulator games, Totally Accurate Battle Simulator will have players ragdolling across the map in huge battles with a hilarious physics system.

They will take control of either the red or blue faction to fight their friends in multiplayer.

Mordhau (2019)

Mordhau is a multiplayer hack and slasher game set in the medieval age. Players will create their own mercenary to fight in many brutal battles, and will also see them wage war in castle sieges, fighting on horseback in cavalry charges and using ranged weapons to dispatch their foes.

Medieval Dynasty (2021)

Set in a medieval world, Medieval Dynasty is an RPG  where players start their life as a lowly and humble hunter, but by constructing buildings, farming, hunting, and interacting with the NPCs they slowly build their own dynasty.

Through this, players will establish a thriving community or die trying.

Life is Feudal: Your Own (2015)

Life is Feudal: Your Own is a multiplayer sandbox RPG, which lets players terraform the world, modular construction for easy building, a crafting system for items, and other survival aspects. It has a physics-based combat system, where directional input is key. A skill system is also present, letting players craft a perfect character.

For Honor (2017)

For Honor finally answers the question of who would win a fight between a knight, a viking, or a samurai. Players take control of one of five factions and then enter one of several different modes in this multiplayer combat game.

The different factions have different fighting styles and classes, letting players choose one they like best.

Kingdom Come Deliverance (2018)

Kingdom Come Deliverance is an extremely historically accurate open-world RPG. Set in 1403 in Bohemia, players take control of Henry, the son of a blacksmith, as he departs his home after his family was slaughtered by the Hungarian king Sigismund, on a quest to join the resistance and remove Sigismund from the throne.
