We discuss whether there will be a Nimona 2, a sequel to the Netflix animated film Nimona, and will contain spoilers.
Nimona has had a rocky road to make it to our screens. Based on a webcomic, Blue Sky Studios would pick up the property but ultimately canceled after more than half of the film had been made.
However, the feature would earn a reprieve when Netflix and Annapurna Pictures would express interest in it and completing the project. Fans would be over the moon with the news that the story would finally reach the screen.
With a sci-fi fantasy premise leaning into Cyberpunk, the film has some great set pieces, veering from adventure to humor with a great upbeat pace. The world-building is also on the nose, leaving you with the feeling that there is probably a lot more for fans to explore, which leads us to the point of this article.
Fans have already been vocal, wanting more from the property so this short article will answer the question: will there be a sequel to Nimona?
Nimona sequel potential release date
At the time of writing, there is no official confirmation of a sequel to Nimona. Animation can be painstakingly slow and varies from production company to production company, so it is hard to put a potential release date on a sequel.
An educated guess would suggest that at least a year of production would be required to realize a sequel, so if they get their skates on, you could watch a follow-up in the Summer or Autumn of 2024.
Nimona 2 sequel cast – who might be in it?
I would imagine that to maintain the style and continuity of the series, the same voice cast used in the first outing would be the best bet.
Chloe Grace Moretz voiced Nimona, and Riz Ahmed was in the sound booth for Ballister Boldheart. And fans did seem to appreciate their talents in the roles, so we would hope that if a sequel is announced, they would reprise their roles.
Nimona 2 sequel plot: What could Nimona 2 be about?
This is a tricky one, as the original story, written by ND Stevenson, does actually have quite a conclusive ending. However, you can never say never, and even though the story does conclude, the characters are still available to revisit. It is worth noting that the film does change many things from the original concept; however, the creator did everything he could to change the titular character.
On a press day leading up to the film’s final release, Stevenson would state, “It was always really important to me that Nimona herself remains the center of this story and that the things that made her were not removed or sanded down or simplified too much.”
So, knowing the care that the creator has had with the story and her stance on staying true to the characters, it may be disheartening for fans if further adventures were produced without his input.
So, if the two main protagonists were to be reunited in a sequel to explore further stories in this realm, we would hope that ND Stevenson was at least a consultant on the project.
