AMC’s Dark Winds was one of the more underrated shows of last year, a period neo-noir that explored evil in possibly multiple varieties infesting the early-70s Navajo Nation.
After becoming a resounding success with both critics and audiences, the show was destined for a second season, which debuted on July 30, 2023. It sees Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee reuniting for another case, this one involving a dangerous religious desert cult called the People of Darkness and possibly even aliens.
Here’s what happened in Dark Winds Season 2 Episode 1:
- In a cold open, we saw Leaphorn and Manuelito arriving at a trailer in the middle of nowhere to apprehend Colton Wolf. He opened fire on them, pinning them down, and we cut back to six days prior.
- Leaphorn is investigating the killing of a cancer patient via a truck bomb. The vehicle was rigged to blow as soon as the ignition key was turned, but who’d go out of their way to kill a man who was already dying?
- Manuelito investigated claims from a local “hemp head” that his fingers were bitten off by an alien mutant sheep. There’s certainly a weird animal roaming the countryside, but no evidence to suggest it’s supernatural (yet!).
- Jim Chee is working as a private investigator and is hired by Rosemary Vines to retrieve a box stolen from her safe, though she won’t reveal its contents. The box is connected to the People of Darkness cult, whom Rosemary’s husband, B.J., used to fund.
- Rosemary claims the box was stolen by Tomas Charley, the son of the man killed in the car bombing Leaphorn is investigating. When Chee tracks him down, he reunites with Leaphorn, and both of them follow the map Charley draws to the remains of a ritual site where Leaphorn discovers the belt buckle his son was wearing when he was killed.
- Wolf opens fire on Leaphorn and Chee to end the episode, leaving Chee wounded and both of them stranded in the desert.
Dark Winds Season 2 Episode 2 Release Date/Time
Dark Winds Season 2 Episode 2 will air on Sunday, August 6, at 9 pm ET/6 pm PT on AMC. Subscribers to AMC+ will, as usual, be able to access the episode a few days early.
