City on Fire is a crime drama series by creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage (Gossip Girl). The Apple original is loosely based on the novel of the same name by Garth Risk Hallberg and stars Chase Sui Wonders as Samantha Yeung, a teenager who is shot in the head on the Fourth of July in Central Park in 2003.
Samantha doesn’t die from the attack but is left in a life-threatening coma. As the series progresses, it becomes apparent that Samantha is connected to a series of arson attacks in New York City, a cult rock band, and a wealthy real estate family in uptown.
The cast also includes Jemima Kirke (Girls) as a member of this wealthy family, Ashley Zukerman (Succession), who plays her husband Keith, and Nico Tortorella as William, a troubled artist.
There’s also Wyatt Oleff (Guardians of the Galaxy) as Charlie, one of Samantha’s closest friends, and John Cameron Mitchell (The Sandman) as the mysterious Amory Gould.
The series has been poorly received by critics and isn’t faring too well in the charts either, but even with all this negativity aimed toward it, is there still hope for a second season of City on Fire?
Will there be a Season 2 of City on Fire – renewed or canceled status
August 4th, 2023
It seems unanimous now after several announcements that City on Fire is canceled.
July 8th, 2023
There is still no news on whether there will be a second season of City on Fire, and the chances there will be news are slim.
The reason so is that the series is based on a book. There are no plans for a sequel book, meaning there’s little chance of a sequel series. It’s very likely that this series will remain limited on Apple TV+.
June 8th, 2023
Apple TV+ is yet to announce whether City on Fire will be renewed for a second outing or if this is the end of the road for the crime drama series. As mentioned, the statistics aren’t good for the show, but let’s discuss the pending renewal in more depth anyway.
City on Fire was almost unanimously disliked by critics. It currently holds a 36% rotten score on Rotten Tomatoes (June 8th, 2023), with the site commenting on poorly developed characters and absurd plot twists. IMDB is a little more favorable with a 6.0/10 rating, although this is still less than ideal.
Popularity-wise, the series hasn’t been trending that much online either and is currently sitting at a lackluster 18th spot on Apple TV+’s own charts, even though it is still releasing weekly installments. The show doesn’t seem to have won over that many fans, either.
It seems pretty obvious, but I’m going to predict that City on Fire won’t be renewed for a second season. The writing is on the wall for this one, and the streaming site rarely renews shows that are underperforming both critically and with audiences.
As always, we will keep you posted on any updates in the pending renewal of City on Fire.

This was great film kept me guessing how can you not consider a season two you haven’t given it enough time to be seen like any other movie it’s threw word of mouth the media or social media give it a little more time please do not threw it out like lasts weeks tuna season two is a must have
The people that don’t like COF is the people w/ limited attention span & people that watch simple shows. This show has a continuous flow of modern day, the past, pieces of the connection to other lives, other things going on in the city. From the rich to street level, how they’re connected. And best of all this show reveals all the underhanded dealings of big business, and how there shady deals effect all of us…. not to mention Sam being shot was just a kid trying to shot a bird, total accident. The simplest things will reveal bigger things if we only pay attention.
I am obsessed and completely yearning for a season 2! Some of the greatest shows had a slow start. With so many choices these days, if you find it you will love it! May have been poorly marketed in all the viewing traffic but it is something fresh with relatively new faces and you should all give it a look-see!
So many open lanes here… Charlie is a Hamilton-Sweeney. Take down demon uncle. Charlie and Sam. SG & the cop fam. Come on. There has to be a 2nd season.
Please make a season 2. I am invested!!!
This was a great series, gripping storyline, excellent cast and well filmed, there’s plenty of ‘loose ends’ to lead into a second season.
Yes!!!! I thought it had a complex connecting story. At least being back a season 2. There are too many cliffhangers not to. We “the audience” deserve some closure.
This show was very well written & kept you thinking on the who dunnit theory. I agree you haven’t given it enough time to be seen. It needs to be given more social media or media to spread this series. It’s made very well and has alot of today’s world issues. Please do not drop this show it was really great & had great writers!
