The Afterparty Season 2 is the much-anticipated follow-up to a surprise Apple TV+ hit. Like the TV equivalent of Knives Out and Glass Onion, the show takes an old-school Agatha Christie-style whodunit and gives it a contemporary makeover, with the key gimmick here being that the testimony of each unreliable narrator — all played by a murderer’s-row of acting talent — is presented in a different genre and style.
The plot of the second season revolves around the murder of a tech billionaire at his own wedding, and the prime suspects include his new wife and her relatives. Those relatives include Zoe (Zoe Chao) from the first season and her now-boyfriend Aniq (Sam Richardson), and before long former Detective Danner (Tiffany Haddish) has arrived to get to the bottom of things.
Here’s what happened in The Afterparty Season 2 Episode 9:
- This episode focused on Isabel, whose story was framed in the style of one of those classic psychological thrillers in which someone — usually a woman — has to figure out if they’re going mad or being manipulated.
- Isabel suspects Edgar of deliberately gaslighting her since he’s trying to put her in a conservatorship to gain control of her assets. Isabel has been struggling since the death of her husband in a plane crash.
- Isabel notices various oddities, like Edgar trying to convince her that Grace’s name is Gail, various items — such as the sword and suit of armor — being ordered to the vineyard in Isabel’s name, and the bright blue sleeping pills she’s taking being revealed as Adderall.
- Isabel tries to catch Edgar in the act by putting a star notation on her wedding speech, which proves the speech she’s given is one written by Edgar.
- Isabel assumes Edgar is going to poison her with the cake, so she swaps the plates around while he’s distracted, believing herself to be his killer.
- Aniq points out that the timing doesn’t work, and that the cake wouldn’t have resulted in Roxana’s death, so something is still amiss.
- Travis confronts Sebastian of trying to sell off Edgar’s cryptocurrency before news of his death leaks and the value tanks. Sebastian also calls the police.
- When the police arrive, Isabel accuses Grace of being Edgar’s killer.
