Apple’s latest horror series, The Changeling, hinted at its fantasy leanings in the first episode, but it really doesn’t step into the mythical realm until the fourth installment.
In this latest episode, Apollo (LaKeith Stanfield) and William (Samuel Herring) journey to a mysterious island in search of their missing wives, Emma (Clark Backo) and Gretta.
The series can be extremely human at times, spearheaded by a stunning performance from LaKeith Stanfield, but the cracks start to show as the mystery elements of the series come to light. The show is hindered by cliched villains, absurd plotting, and frustratingly cryptic dialogue.
Here’s what happened in The Changeling Season 1, Episode 4:
- Apollo and Patrice make a business deal with William. He pays them $70k for the first edition book, which he wants to use to win back his distant wife.
- Using this money, Apollo pays back Emma’s sister Kim, with $10k to cover the funeral costs. He asks her what Emma’s third wish was, but Kim refuses to answer.
- Apollo is messaged by a stranger, who believes Emma is still alive. They meet up that day. The unknown sender is William. His online friends have found CCTV footage of Emma. She is on an island in the East River.
- They take a boat to this mysterious island, which William believes is North Brother Island, a place where infectious people were taken in the past. They are soon attacked and beaten by the Wise Ones.
- Apollo is taken to their leader Cal. She believes that baby Brian was just an illusion and not Apollo’s real child after all. William interrupts this conversation; he is also captured.
- Cal beats William half to death. They are both thrown in a jail cell. It is revealed that William’s wife Gretta killed their daughter Agnes in similar circumstances to Emma with Brian.
- William wants Apollo to find Gretta to convince her to forgive him. He says that if Apollo refuses to help then everyone on the island will die.

Predictions
- Reading between the lines, it seems that both Gretta and Emma had realized that their child was an impostor, possibly a dangerous foe, or the changeling of the show’s title. They killed this mythical creature and joined the Wise Ones. William didn’t believe his wife and now wants forgiveness for his past mistake. Apollo will end up in a similar place to William, desperate for Emma’s forgiveness too.
- Cal will kill William and then Apollo will escape from his prison. He will continue his mission alone, searching for his wife. As he journeys across the island, more of the group’s mysteries will be revealed.
- We will then see the events from Emma’s point of view.
