Part 2 Chapter 13, “The Passion of Sabrina Spellman”, is a spellbinding teaser of what’s to come with Sabrina (Kiernan Shipka) under pressure to tap into her dark devotions to the Dark Lord. The Dark Lord tells Mary Wardwell (Michelle Gomez) that Sabrina will be the Prophet to Earth, the new herald, but she wagers with The Dark Lord that Sabrina will not succumb to his demands.
In a scene of strange anticipation, the Dark Lord commands Sabrina to his first order, insisting that she must follow his will. He asks her to steal a piece of gum. She’s unsurprisingly confused by such a simple task, so refuses to do so, but Zelda (Miranda Otto) advises against resisting his orders. Wardwell stops her from stealing the gum.
“The Passion of Sabrina Spellman” asserts the spiraling romances that have continued to be ever-present from the beginning of Season 2. Rosalind (Jaz Sinclair) imagines kissing Harvey (Ross Lynch) again, but you can imagine the guilt consuming her conscience. On the flipside, Sabrina is practising a stage play, ironically about the story of Lilith and the Dark Lord, and as she watches Nicholas (Gavin Leatherwood) rehearse, she is told that she has a crush on him. The Dark Lord whispers in her ear that if she pulls the pin, the Lilith lead role will be hers. Her guilt wins; she knows removing the pin will hurt the current lead actress.
The pressure ramps up for Sabrina in Chapter 13; in a random and undramatic moment, she begins to start choking on the spot, and she believes it was the Dark Lord punishing her for not following his commands. Hilda Spellman (Lucy Davis) reiterates that she should not resist.
“The Passion of Sabrina Spellman” finally sees Sabrina meeting her mortal friends Rosalind and Harvey, and in a heartwrenching moment for the half-witch, she learns that they are in their play; playing as Romeo and Juliet. As she sits with Billie and looks at the pair, while requesting that he stops bullying Theo in the boys’ changing room, she finds herself staring at Rosalind and Harvey and getting extremely jealous, demonstrating the fuel of teenage hormones. Her darkness starts rattling their table.
Another issue for Sabrina is the scars that are forming on her back, so she confides in Ambrose (Chance Perdomo), asking what he was asked to do by The Dark Lord; but he, unfortunately, will not reveal the full task.
Back at Baxter High, Theo (Lachlan Watson) finds herself enraged by the boys bullying her for playing basketball, which leads to Billie falling and snapping his leg. She caused him to fall, but in the distance is Sabrina, who I suspect inflicted her darkness into Theo. Sabrina’s dark devotions are looming, with the Dark Lord ensnaring his grip.
Chapter 13 sees the Dark Lord’s strength impacting all those around her, with Rosalind getting coincidentally ill, meaning Sabrina has to become Juliet. While practicing her lines with Harvey, they end up proceeding to the bedroom, but she soon sees scars on his chest which he cannot see. She walks off and Harvey, in an emotional plea, demands that this is the last time she hurts him. It’s hard being a half-witch and loving someone.
As one last throw of the dice, the Dark Lord punishes her cat Salem and tells her that it will keep happening if she continues to deny him. He asks her to burn an empty building, assuring that it will all stop if she does, the only issue, which I found genius from the Lord, is that she must burn down Baxter High. When she tries, he tells her to stop, because she proves to have the heart.
Chapter 13, “The Passion of Sabrina Spellman”, ends as strongly as the previous episode, with the Dark Lord placing his chess pieces to craft Sabrina into his herald. The girl who plays Lilith ends up sick as well, so she has to play the role. Wardwell is observant of the intimate scene between Lilith and the Dark Lord (played by Nicholas) and starts tearing up when they kiss. This is personal for Wardwell, but the Dark Lord enjoys the play, praising them for their chemistry.
Other noteworthy events are that Zelda is at war with Sister Jackson, with both of them attempting to secure their power in The Academy. And Wardwell declares that she will continue to prevent Sabrina from becoming the Dark Lord’s herald. Chapter 13 ends with Sabrina smiling, and stealing gum.
