Sabrina (Kiernan Shipka) learning that she is not a heroic messiah, but potentially an evil being, has rocked the character. Chapter 19, “The Mandrake”, sees her closest social group deliberating on what they examined at the mine. Sabrina believes Mary Wardwell (Michelle Gomez) will hold all the answers, and she does; she states that her being the Herald of Hell means the apocalypse is coming, but if she manages to lose all her powers, she could prevent it happening. Wardwell recommends she uses the Mandrake method to rid her powers for good.
Ambrose (Chance Perdomo) is against this predictable idea; he understands the repercussions and dangers of Sabrina going entirely mortal. Regardless, he helps her with the mandrake anyway, and at first, they do not believe it worked, sending Sabrina off to use another method, involving a lot of mud; it was a good excuse for the writers to remove Sabrina from the story for a little while.
While one danger is handled, the other, Blackwood (Richard Coyle), is not. He announces the new Church of Judas, and The Academy will adopt the traditional rules. Hilda (Lucy Davis) tries to politically stop this from happening, discussing Blackwood’s plans to the councils, but one of them asks for sexual favors in returns, so she kills him.
The consequences of doing the mandrake spell come to fruition, with Sabrina acting strangely and overly happy. She approaches Hilda, Rosalind (Jaz Sinclair), Harvey (Ross Lynch) and Theo (Lachlan Watson) separately before showing another form of her self. To summarise, the mandrake has taken Sabrina’s form, and she wants to make new forms of all her friends.
As for the real Sabrina; she returns muddy from the pointless mud river needing a bath. The Beast Adam, created by Madam Satan, attacks her, with Nicholas (Gavin Leatherwood) having to save her. He is initially angry at Sabrina for removing her powers but relieves his feelings for a moment to discuss the prophecy he found. The prophecy speaks of miracles, and this coincidentally triggers Sabrina’s memories; every time Sabrina has conducted a miracle, Mary Wardwell has been present.
Zelda (Miranda Otto) is in hot water; Blackwood learns of Zelda’s betrayals and the baby, locking her up in a cell. Because Prudence disagrees with Blackwood’s plans, she frees Zelda. Slowly Blackwood is losing grip of his acquaintances.
Sabrina comes face to face with her mandrake form, and Ambrose suggests they have an old-fashioned duel to settle matters. Sabrina realizes that the mandrake is young-minded and will not be able to strategize. Nicholas has Wardwell tied up due to their accusations against her, but then they read into the prophecy further, and realize that the apocalypse is triggered if Sabrina commits suicide. By the time Nicholas and Wardwell reach the duel, it’s too late, Sabrina has killed her mandrake self, essentially killing herself, triggering the end of the world. She will become the Queen of Hell.
