Summary

Who Would You Take to a Deserted Island? waits for one pivotal moment between four flatmates, and it is worth the audiences’ patience.

I was kicking myself when I learned of the twist in Who Would You Take to a Deserted Island? / ¿A quién te llevarías a una isla desierta?, the latest Netflix Spanish film to hit the platform. The movie spends so long engrossing the audience in a tight vacuum that you do not consider the obvious.

But I won’t spoil it; I’d highly recommend adding this to your exhaustive thumbnails list, because Who Would You Take to a Deserted Island? is one of those situational dramas where the atmosphere and persistent dialogue adds to the realism of the story.

The Netflix Spanish film is precisely written; Who Would You Take to a Deserted Island? is about four flatmates that are about to embark on a new journey, going their separate ways and leaving their apartment full of memories.

The audience is led to believe that the characters are struggling to let go, that they are experiencing a young-adult mid-life crisis, and the possibilities in progressing their careers are exacerbating their insecurities. But in fact, the Netflix film is leading to one pivotal moment; after one last “hurrah”, drinking heavily through the night before they all say goodbye, one of the women asks “who would you take to a deserted island?”.

Once that question is raised, you can almost smell the fumes of alcohol, as the truth starts to reek in the room. The film before this moment begins to make sense; there are a lot of suppressed secrets in this room.

Who Would You Take to a Deserted Island? smartly keeps the scenes intimate, tightly closed and patient so you can truly experience the characters’ feelings. Marta (María Pedraza) and Marc (Jaime Lorente), in particular, are characters that offer more when silence dawns between them, with words not reflecting their body language.

The Netflix film is helped by encouraging, dramatic performances from the cast members, and once drunken conversations go full flow, you are witnessing truly admirable acting talent.

Who Would You Take to a Deserted Island? is yet another high-quality Netflix drama film gracing the foreign category.
