Summary
13 Reasons Why Season 3, Episode 1, “Yeah. I’m the New Girl” injects mystery following on from the end of last season, while introducing a new narrator.
This recap of 13 Reasons Why Season 3, Episode 1, “Yeah. I’m the New Girl” contains significant spoilers.
The opening episode of Season 3 introduces us to an entirely new narrator — Ani Achola, a new senior at Liberty High School. Ani brings the audience to the present day, eight months later, where a fight has kicked off at the Homecoming game, and apparently Hillcrest started it.
Following on from the drama, Bryce Walker disappeared, and no-one understands where he has gone. Ani explains to the audience that she is going to explain how we got here, but you can already sense that the Netflix series is going to drag the mystery out for as long as possible.
The cops question Clay about Bryce’s disappearance, but he claims to know nothing. Even his mother Nora Walker approaches Clay, using the Mother angle to try and eke out answers, but none are forthcoming.
What is clear in Episode 1, “Yeah. I’m the New Girl”, is that Clay and the group had Tyler’s back following on from Season 2’s finale. Tony especially is doing everything he can to help Tyler recover from his failed planned shooting. The shooting, and Bryce, are somehow intrinsically linked, and the characters are keeping the cards close to their chests.

Ani takes an interest in everyone in Episode 1; on her first day Clay gave Ani a tour, and it was terrible, but what was clear is that his anger flowed over the simplest of subjects. Ani also wants to help Jessica become Student President, believing she has a purpose.
13 Reasons Why Season 3, Episode 1, “Yeah. I’m the New Girl” ends with the reveal that Ani’s mother is Bryce’s grandfather’s nurse, complicating matters further; Zach lied about how the Homecoming fight against Hillcrest started; and we see texts from Clay’s smartphone, threatening to kill Bryce directly.
Another season, another mystery; let’s hope it does not get too silly.
