The opening Episode of Marianne, “Your Dreams”, shows a young woman named Caroline shouting for her mother. She finds her mother in the kitchen murmuring plenty of obscure words. She’s cutting her teeth out calling Caroline “Catherine”. She shows her bloodied teeth and says, “that’s for Emma”.
Episode 1 then introduces us to the lead character, Emma Larsimon (Victoire Du Bois), a best-selling author at a book reading. She reads everyone the ending of her latest book, claiming she is done with horror writing. Emma is a free-soul, not caring what other people think. She has a banter-led relationship with her assistant Camille, blackmailing her into joining her wherever she goes. That’s her personality, and it’s engaging. One of her fans sees that she drinks alcohol from a soda cup.
But at the book reading, Caroline shows up. She claims her mother is sick and that Marianne, from Emma’s books, has taken over. Caroline shows cut marks all over her body before she is escorted out by security.
At night, when Emma returns home drunk, she has a horrible nightmare. Marianne asks her to return to her home time. The next day at work, in a shocking scene, Caroline warns Emma before hanging herself in front of everyone. Emma needs to return to her hometown.
When Emma returns to her hometown, Elden, Marianne is calling for her. The priest accuses Emma of bringing bad things to the town. When Emma and Camille visit Caroline’s mother, she talks as if she is Marianne, proceeding to soil herself, and forcing Camille to touch her urine. Both of them flee before the situation is made worse.
It seems because Emma has stopped writing, her horrors are coming to life. The demon witch needs her story to continue. Emma purposefully left the story open-ended.
Emma visits her parents but embarrassingly catches them having sex. The dinner is awkward, with her father talking about how Emma needs to earn her forgiveness from the priest. At night, Camille cannot sleep, so goes to the bathroom but becomes spooked by the door handle moving. She walks out to the landing and sees Emma’s naked mother walking around and throwing up. Emma’s father hits Camille and says, “this is not us!”. Emma wakes up to see Camille spooked and makes her way outside to see her parents, naked, holding hands in a union. Her father screams at her when she begs for forgiveness and says, “then write!”. Emma collapses to the floor. Marianne Season 1, Episode 1, “Your Dreams” gets off to an intriguing, gruesome start, showing the depth of Emma’s “Horror World”.
