Episode 1 of Inside Bill’s Brain: Decoding Bill Gates expresses a vision from Bill Gates that most will not expect — toilets.

Who would have thought that the founder of Microsoft would now be taking on the world to create a self-sustainable toilet? Of course, there’s a purpose behind his vision. At the start of Episode 1, Bill Gates and his foundation are dumbfounded that developed countries are improving sanitation methods, yet in developing countries, thousands of people die from diarrhea a day and it is the second leading cause of death for children under five.

What an unacceptable statistic.

Episode 1 confirms what we already know — Bill Gates is a problem solver. His entire career has been based on aggressive levels of research and applying his high intelligence to provide the most-used operating systems in the world. But since 2008, when he stood down from Microsoft from an operational standpoint, it’s clear he is on a mission, with his wife Melinda, to solve problems that are seemingly out of reach.

A toilet that generates enough energy to sanitize waste and create drinkable water without the need for a multi-billion piping project became a drive for Bill Gates, not just a vision.

As well as trying to solve third world problems, Inside Bill’s Brain: Decoding Bill Gates analyses a man that went from a monopolized computer software market to philanthropist overnight — he can hit a tennis ball for 8 hours but also loves to read multiple books on the same subject to provide the most calculated context on the subject matter. Episode 1 gives us a slice into his personal life; there’s a reference that Bill is not as emotional as the average person, yet the death of his mother sincerely hit home.

Another insight that I was not aware of is that his wife Melinda is a direct partner of his in his charity foundation. In meetings, she is doing 50% of the leading, a dynamic partnership that is almost perfect for the married couple.

By the end of Bill’s Brain: Decoding Bill Gates Episode 1, Bill Gates has found several solutions to the ultimate toilet that can be a delicate balance between waste burning and clean water generation. The sticking point is that technology is too expensive to consider, and Bill eagerly waits for a company that can provide the technology at a low price. Eventually, Bill Gates finds that company and the end of the episode suggests that it’s starting to be implemented in parts of the world today.
